Here in CA lawns are a waste of money. You have to keep them watered. Water costs money. But with the drought you aren't allowed to water them enough. Then your lawn dies. Then you have to install a new one. Cycle starts again. Sighing!

Much better idea to replace it with succulents. Or as some people do, make it out of concrete or fake grass. None of which looks great.

I have eliminated lawn on my lot except for a 10 ft strip on the outside of the fence. and that is except for the corner where I put the rock garden and cactus bed and a couple of shrubs in, because semi-trailers kept cutting the corner and creating trenches and it was impossible to mow. The bottom 3 or 4 feet of that corner are now limestone boulders, semi goes up he better not be top heavy.

My semps are now on the lot, not killing the little bit of saint augustine in my front yard, not on chairs where the wind blows past the roots. I'm not doing any more to them, except seeing who lives and dies. Until probably June. All out of time.

The cactus bed. I tried sempervivum, they were being cooked. Might put some out there out of my current pots, just one, to the left of the yucca so it gets shade from the yucca. Since the current survivors aren't webbys. The ones I had were, very nice not survive in Texas webbys.

Evan,
Oddly enough changing the font also aligned the thread images. Thanks for the tip!

Good morning Alice.
Unfortunately my computer is on the fritz again, so I'm doing everything on my phone.
I just got back from California where the weather was absolutely beautiful the whole time I was there. Kevin, you can blame me for this bad weather it showed up the day I came home. I still haven't been out to see how all the (Semps) are doing, I'll give an update after I go out today.
How is everyone else's weather doing, and how have your Semps faired through this winter?

@JungleShadows Kevin do you have any new semps coming out this year?

Lynn,

Chick Charms will be putting out 3 giants and one more normal-sized semp this year. Mountain Crest has several that are being propagated but I don't think they're quite ready yet. This includes my first heuff. Even though I've raised thousands of heuff seedlings, this was the first I thought was distinctive enough. There are a couple lavenders and pink heuffs that I'm evaluating now.

The first seed pots are germinating at amazingly high %'s. These were ones where I had lots of seed and from very fertile parents so it's a bit of a jaded sample. I'm sure some of the more difficult parents and wide crosses won't be as good in the germination department.

As I'm weeding the semp beds I'm pitching out cultivars that didn't winter well. I'm also pitching a bunch of seedlings that haven't met the mark as I REALLY need space to row out more seedlings. I have over 100 pots of seed planted. So many things bloomed in '21 because of the heat and I got to cross every day because there was no rain to interfere with crossing The pollen was lovely and fluffy!

Alex, If you want to be puckered up and spitting out the leaves, then they are wonderful. I can't imagine anyone eating them. Even deer take a bite and just say NO after the first bite. They have lots of tannin cells that confer an acrid taste as well as the malic acid that accumulates in the vacuole.

Any plant that survives grazing by goats can't be tasty!

They may look like artichokes, but they surely aren't.

Kevin you will certainly be busy this entire growing season. We all look forward to seeing the new cultivars when they become available.
I am excited to see what comes from your new crop of seedlings.

Alex I don't think I'll give it a try.

Alex, I'm going to pass. I'll eat some lettuce instead.
