I bought that big Phal last fall, Ted. It had dropped all its flowers, and was on the sale rack at Lowe's in the blazing sun. But it had big leaves, and a few were not shriveled so I took a chance.

So probably 6 months at most. In fact, here's a pic of it right after I re-potted it in mid-November. It had a ton of soggy moss crammed around it, and perked up almost right away. The new blooms are on the same spike it had then.

Big Grin Well, y'know we all have our successes and failures. My first rescue Odontobrassia mem. Nikoline Lorentzen 'Marz Starz' took 3 years to finally put up a flower spike. Then a stupid raccoon blundering about in the pool cage last summer broke it off! So, I have seen one withered flower on that puppy in 4 years of coddling and pampering it. Hopefully this summer it will see fit to try again.
Sad Last gasp of all my Nun's orchids for this year.

Elaine, Slc. Anduril 'Krull's Scarlet' is a winner. Great color and form. Thumbs up

Ursula, wonderful show. Your Dendrobium lindleyi is a show stopper. It has to be the best one I have seen. Also, Dendrobium superbum has magnificent color. Very nice. I'm also fond of Nakamotoara Newberry Aprikot. Vandacious orchids very widely, almost like the Dendrobiums.

My company left today so I'm back to normal. Next event is Redlands.

Rkidkelly posted a good thread about building his first greenhouse along with very nice pictures into the Greenhouse forum here on ATP, very interesting and informative! Have a look!
The thread "1st greenhouse" in Greenhouses forum

I like Orchid scents like that around the house, Ted! Thumbs up

Thank you Jim!
The thing about the Den lindleyi and jenkinsii is that EVERYBODY tells you not to water them in Winter. I didn't listen, knowing that under my conditions these plants would be toast by the time blooming season came around, truly! Both plants got watered daily straight through the supposed to be dry season. The lindleyi has been blooming like that for several years in a row now and I treated the new for me jenkinsii the same way.
My point is that the books don't always consider YOUR cultural conditions. In my case that would be full sun, minimum temp 60 degr. and excellent ventilation.

That is SO good to hear, Ursula. I think I nearly killed one of my favorites by carefully depriving it all winter. (where is the icon for tearing your hair??)

Den. Judith Nakayama is the one in my profile pic, and is very slowly putting up some new growths now. I am too embarrassed to even show a picture of it. *Blush*

My outdoor conditions are cooler and dryer in the winter anyway, so they probably get the rest they need from nature. This year I think I might group those Dens together come fall, and treat them a little more nicely.

Woohoo! I just got off of the phone with Andy and pre-ordered five orchids to be picked up at Redlands.
1. Paphinia posadarum
2. Cym. tracyanum
3. Aerides houiettiana (mine up and died for no apparent reason)
4. Epi. parkinsonianum
5. Caularthron bicornutum

This is going to be fun! I'm also trying to line up a palm that I have been looking for forever. Green Grin!

Wow, that's going to be a fabulous selection. What's that line from "Jaws"? You're gonna need a bigger - truck!

I was just looking at Aerides odorata on the site at Palmer Orchids. I am going to make a pilgrimage out to visit them - soon! I think they also have a selection of Neos and I've been wanting one a long time.

I'm hoping for admission to the Encyclia Club. My Enc. alata x Early Bird has just opened its first flower, tough to get the colors to pop in the bright morning sunlight.

I agree Carol sent me a start of Gerberara last fall, and it came with blooms that survived shipping and lasted for weeks. It is now finishing a second round of blooms on two spikes.

Between Jim and I, we will have Florida Gerberaras blooming non-stop, it seems.

Enc. alata x Early Bird is on my list, Elaine. Really impressed with the color. Hurray!

My division of Gerberara from Carol had a hard winter. Thought I might loose it. Trimmed a lot of dead plant away. Carol once called it her weed orchid. Rolling on the floor laughing She might be right. At last look 4 new stalks are growing strong. Nothing can keep this plant down. We will have Gerberara flowers this year.

Hey Jim. Counting the days!
My Gerberara from Carol sulked for at least a year, got scale a few times, etc. but it now has a third trickle of blooms (two at the moment) and seems to have hit it's stride. What a champ!

Well, Mama had a hard winter too, but it has 1 new spike and several new growths starting. The one that is mounted on my lemon tree has had 2 spikes in bloom for about a month. I swear that is the easiest orchid I've ever encountered! It may not be floofy, but it is reliable. Big Grin
