Yesterday I did some repotting of some of my plants so hopefully they will grow big and strong!

Ipomoea albivenia has steadily been filling out. The seller had clipped all the leaves off for some reason.

Ipomoea horsfalliae. This one I bought from Logee's and it had buds on it when it arrived but then they dropped off. But it's been putting out so much new growth I repotted it and made a teepee for it-

This isn't a morning glory but I'm obsessed with plants that make a caudex-
Uncarina grandidieri. This one also lost its leaves in shipping but it's growing back!

Here are some photos of mature plants-

Oh and how could I forget? Ipomoea platensis is still having a major growth spurt. It didn't do much for a while-

And it looks like ipomoea pubescens is about to make true leaves. They look like they will be fuzzy

I have to overwinter macrorhiza indoors in a dormant state. I keep the soil almost bone dry until I see new growth. My plant has a very nice caudex type root. I don't know if it's a true caudex but I don't really know what the definition is for caudex. All I know is the growth points are way above ground.

First attempt ever at growing Ipomoea purpurea indoors in winter. Flowering on small plant under short day photoperiod just like I see in Ipomoea nil.

Pretty purp Joseph! Nice to see on these gray winter days.
Interesting variegated Ipomoea purpurea, do you know what the flower will look like?

It could be one of these flowers.

I don't think it's technically a caudex, just a fat root. Mine were dormant as well. When I bought the other one a few years ago, the root was buried. So on mine I have them halfway buried.

Wow, Lisa where did you get those seeds? I grew that one in 2007 but never had anything but solid flowers! Nice to see it again!

Joseph those variegated purp flowers are so pretty! Looking forward to seeing what you get!

I got them in a trade from a lovely member. They are older so I'm excited they are sprouting! Fingers crossed for the mutant flowers!

Lisa, are you growing all these ipomeas to keep as indoor plants or are they supposed to be set in the ground outdoors come springtime? If they are going out, is it the correct time to sew indoors now? I am thinking New York must be quite similar to my clime and was wondering if the plants wouldn't get too large for me before setting out. Safe time for me is perhaps the 2nd week in June if lucky.

Hi! Most are perennial types but not hardy here in NY so they will go outside potted for the summer and then come back in to overwinter. The annual types I usually directly sow outside in May. These are just experiments to keep me busy during the winter. I'm right between zone 6 and 7 in southern NY not far from the city.

I've learned that safe planting dates are determined by stable night temperatures.

For Ipomoea nil, such as the large flower Japanese morning glory cultivars, I wait until night temperatures are around 18C (65F).

For Ipomoea purpurea, which is more cold hardy, plant out when night temperatures are around 16C (60F).

What were you thinking of growing?

Since your season is probably kind of short, you might want to start them indoors a bit before your last freeze date? Kikyo I usually direct sow here in early May although the general rule where I live is after Mother's Day. But I'm quite south of you so your freeze date is probably later. When I sow Kikyo in May I usually get blooms in August.

My Kikyo started blooming on 8/28 this year. These were the first blooms.
