Hello again! It is once more that time of year that roses should start getting planted, and to my surprise, I can't find another King's Ransom to replace the poor little guy that didn't make it last year Sad I've checked all the links on Help Me Find, but no luck. I'm hoping that it's early enough in the planting season still, (as my local Wally-World just started stocking body-bag roses again, and this is about when I found them last year,) and I figured that if I start putting out word now, I may have a chance of finding another before the planting season is done. So if anyone knows where I can buy a King's Ransom, I would be greatly appreciative for the info on any leads. Thanks in advance, and I hope everyone's having a wonderful day! Cheers, Cotton

As a backup, I'm looking for something readily available to replace my fallen King's Ransom. To make things difficult, it will actually be planted in close proximity to the King's Ransom that did make it (with the Chicago Peace between them), and I'm thinking about the Golden Masterpiece. It is one of the parents that created the King's Ransom, so I know that the color won't be exact, but I'm hoping to get as close as possible.

Rose (Rosa 'Golden Masterpiece')

I can get one of these in a 1gal. from the 'Bay at the low-low price of 10x [<---exaggerated] what I paid for my King's Ransom D'Oh! Not sure what size a plant that comes in a 1gal. pot might be, and the description says it's one year old, but I'm hoping it's just one more season of babying before it can be watered once per week, and fed twice per month like the others. Any opinions on how well it might match to the untrained eye? Any better options? Any reason why it might not do as well here in Amarillo? Give me your thoughts! Cheers, Cotton

Do y'all have a Lowes or Home Depot? Maybe they have a kings ransom?

Actually after a google search it looks like no one Carrie's this rose :(

Try propagating again. I THINK (but i could be wrong) that you have to take all the leaves off except for a few and stick the branch down deep into the soil. Google propagating hybrid teas. I watched a video about propagating roses a long time ago and this is how a guy did it. He removed most of the leaves so energy wasn't wasted on them.

I actually ordered one of the parent plants of the King's Ransom named "Golden Masterpiece" in hopes that it will pass to the untrained eye. It's supposed to arrive today, and when I checked the tracking status, it was listed as "Visibly Damaged". I'll have to see for myself how bad it really is, but the weather is in the 60's & blowing 30MPH today, so I have no idea what I'm going to do. They say that failure to plan is a plan for failure, but I have my own twisted form of optimism, and that is to expect the worst, and hope to be pleasantly surprised. Smiling Thanks for the replies, and I'll keep y'all posted. Cheers, Cotton

Even with a healthy rose, in your conditions, I would pot the rose up for the first year and allow it to grow a healthy root mass.

I thinks this is especially important when you are gardening in less than ideal conditions for roses. That root mass is the foundation you are building for a healthy rose.

If you go back re-read Arturo's, @hampartsum , post in this thread on page one, he writes about the importance of allowing the rose to grow a healthy root mass before planting in the ground.

He is also correct that you will not often see this advice write in much of rose literature. The reason for that is most rose literature focuses on growing roses in more ideal conditions than ours.

I don't think you should plant it out until you have a sense that it is a healthy plant

'Golden Masterpiece' is a strong rose and has stood the test of time.

Good luck, Cotton.

Smiles,
Lyn

@RoseBlush1 Excellent advice there (as always) Smiling The 1-gallon rosebushes are one year old, but I sprang for the 2-gallon size just for this reason. I'm eager to get everything planted where it's supposed to be, and now that the new plant has arrived, I can say that I am quite pleased to see that it looks nice & healthy with a large stalk. Thanks again for the input! Cotton

Usually I take Sunday off, but I wanted to get this baby in the ground, and the weather is really nice today.

I removed all of the dirt from around the poor rose that didn't make it last year, & replaced it with a mixture of native soil and generic gardening soil.

We'll be back to our regiment of twice-per-day watering, and shade during the latter half of the day until November. Oh, the hoops we jump through! ...but the payoff is so worth Smiling Cheers, Cotton

I still have roses in their pots stuck in the ground. Still working on finding homes for them. 2 I found homes for which will be flanking a honeysuckle vine once I rip out the bushes flanking it. Need to pull the pots out this week and see if they're alive. If not I have the perfect excuse to buy more roses when I go greenhouse shopping next month. nodding nodding

It's only been a few days, but I thought I'd post a pic.

Thumb of 2024-04-10/CottonTexas/f9f339

We got some rain yesterday, and it's been windy (as usual), but I'm not seeing the serious wilting that I saw with the others when they were planted, so I'll take that as a win - though I know I may be a little early in such celebration. Smiling I hope everyone's having a wonderful day! Cheers, Cotton

Well folks, it's time for another update on the newest addition.

Thumb of 2024-04-17/CottonTexas/905aba

There has been some wilting, but here's hoping that the worst is over. She's still got a lot of beautiful green leaves that look nice & healthy. I gave this one some plant food just a couple of says ago, at the same time as the others. I hope that's okay. The two older sisters are putting out tiny little buds already, so it won't be long now before we start getting some wonderful rose blooms. Hurray! I hope everyone is having a great day! I do have to say that I like being able to keep track of the progress here, because when you see them every day, it's easy to overlook the changes, whereas when you can look back on the photos every week...

Thumb of 2024-04-24/CottonTexas/425c4a

...and still do not see a difference Hilarious! It's still green, so I'll wait a bit before stressing over it. It's been crazy-windy here over the past week (avg. ~20MPH), and I've been worried that this poor thing would get blown away! I've taken to watering this one in the afternoon and evening (instead of morning and evening) to coincide with when I put up and take down the shade. The other two are growing like crazy, but are being stingy with their buds, and refusing to bloom. I guess that's just how these beauties have a way of teaching us patience. Smiling I hope everyone is doing well, and I'll post again next week. Cheers, Cotton

Your new rose is too busy growing new roots and getting settled in to its new home to bother with putting on any top growth. Big Grin

Patience is one of the most valuable tools you have in your tool box. It gets used every day.

Finally we get to start seeing some top growth on our newest addition:

Thumb of 2024-05-01/CottonTexas/992776

Today was plant-food day, and I've put this one on the same regimen as the others, getting fed on the 1st & 15th, though she still gets twice daily watering, while the other two get a deep drink on Mon. & Wed. I'm still blown away by all the help I've received from the amazing folks here. I feel like I've unlocked the code to successfully growing beautiful roses. If only I could figure out a quicker way of acquiring more patience Smiling I hope everyone is doing well, and having a wonderful day. See y'all in a week! Cotton

As for our newest Golden Masterpiece, there seems to be good looking progress here, and I'm quite pleased.

Thumb of 2024-05-08/CottonTexas/c03366

With the overcast weather and the rain we had last week, I was a bit lackadaisical when it came to covering and watering, and I believe I'm seeing the consequences in the King's Ransom:

Thumb of 2024-05-08/CottonTexas/7f75d3

Thumb of 2024-05-08/CottonTexas/941e1a

I was thinking that this year the two established roses would not need the hoop-shade, and would only need a deep watering once per week. I was still using the hoop-shade because of the new gal, and I quickly realized that I would need to water them twice per week to keep them from drying out. I assume that what we're looking at in the above photos is sun damage, but I left the water on at a trickle for them for several hours to be sure they were properly hydrated after seeing such serious wilting. The Chicago Peace looks to be just fine though, so I'm thinking it's more likely sun-damage on the yellow petals, but I'm still not 100% certain.
...and here I thought I'd "cracked the code" - lol. Well, we all know where pride goeth, no? I hope everyone is having a great day! Cheers, Cotton

We had a cool-front move through here, so mid-40's to low-70's & a good bit of rain on Friday night. A couple of days there hung out around 55° all day.

No need to shade your roses at those temps. Let them have all of the full sunlight they can get for photosynthesis.

My roses are all established, so looking back, I only remember giving new roses shade is when the temps were in the 90s on up to triple digits.

There are a lot of right ways to grow roses. In my garden, since I don't have naturally fertile soil, every spring I put down a layer of better soil under the canopy of the rose and then mulch with leaves, if I can get enough of them, and I might use much smaller wood chips if that is all I have available.

My goal is to create an environment for soil bacteria and worms as well as helping the soil near the surface stay moist for the feeder roots to spread out.

The deep watering is for the anchor roots where the moisture won't evaporate as quickly and helps the rose always have moisture available.

When I water, I water beyond the base of the rose so that the feeder roots will spread out.

To me, it's important to grow a good root mass to have healthy roses.

Smiles,
Lyn

I thought so too, and with the rain we got on Fri, I don't know why there's such wilting. Shrug!
