I was just out spreading mulch around the daylilies, and saw quite a few scapes! I was expecting no blooms this year, so I'm really excited!!

My daylilies are so bad this year that I just can't get my self going. I haven't made a cross or picture because most of the scapes are short. I've only had just a very few bloom that I bought last fall and this spring. I had expected many wonderful blooms from them but I'm thinking it was our terrible Spring temps that has prevented them all from blooming. I did get to see one bloom on Get Jiggy and it was so pretty. This has been a crazy year for me. Maybe next year will be better.

That's awful Mona. We are just the opposite here, very tall scapes this year. But, I am noticing fewer scapes. Not all fans have scapes so far unless they start a little later with a staggered bloom.

No, I'd say this week was probably the peak. I had a lot of blooms, some good ones, but also some pitiful. I bought a good sized order from Maryotts last fall and only one of them has bloomed and it was only about 6" scape. The fall of 2011 I got in about the same size order and they all multiplied and bloomed like crazy. The same with the order I got from Michele in 2011. I had bunches of blooms in 2012 but only Comic Odyssey has bloomed this year. So, no doubt about it, it's got to be the weather.

I just walked around with my granddaughter for a look. We saw a few new ones, Get Jiggy and Martian Moons. I have a lot of older seedlings blooming that didn't bloom last year, so they are a gift this year. I really think it was the weather. It's ok, I haven't felt like working this summer like I did last year. I plan to get a lot of mine sold this fall. Here's hoping I will get better as time goes on.

I still have a lot of scapes coming up, so maybe they will have pretty blooms. I hope to get out tomorrow early enough to make some good photos.

Same thing here Mona. I still have quite a lot that don't have scapes or are just starting to scape. Our peak bloom is usually mid May but I would say we are about a month behind schedule or maybe more. Normally I'm way into rebloom and I've only had a handful that has rebloomed. Now it's time to start cutting scapes off so any that haven't bloomed won't get to this year. The only ones that get to keep their scapes is any that have seed pods, which is very few this year, and seedlings.

Michele, why do you cut the scapes off if they haven't bloomed yet? I can't imagine doing that!

I'm shocked that I'm getting any scapes this year, since I just moved all of the plants to our new house, and I hope they keep on coming!

If my garden was just a "LOOK AT ME" garden then I would leave them. But since we sell we try and cut all the scapes so the plant will put it's energy into increasing/growing instead of blooming. Last year when all the plants were looking wore out and ragged from blooming and growing seed pods (plus our terrible heat) I went and cut everything that didn't have pods and within a week or so they looked brand new and revived again. In our zone we can get first bloom and usually 2 rebloom cycles on most of the daylilies if we leave them; I remember cutting off scapes last October when I was dividing things because they were sending up more scapes.

If I were going to sell seed this year I would have left the scapes on, but since we are having such a weird bloom season and things are so far behind on blooming I decided not to sell because that would put me wayyyyy behind on our dividing schedule waiting on the pods to ripen, Plus most of my pods are aborting this year and I have just gotten fed up and decided to stop pollinating.

Things are definitely behind here, and I have quite a number of short/stunted scapes even on plants that have been here for a while. Things have just started blooming (of the 3 plants that bloomed 2 were from
Florida this spring) and I'm still finding new scapes. I'm wondering how much pollinating I will actually accomplish between it heating up with summer and running into having pods when it frosts and freezes!

Thanks Michele! I figured that it must have something to do with selling them after I asked about it, but didn't think about them looking better when they had more energy for growth of the plant instead of the seeds. Makes perfect sense now!

I'm not going to do any pollinating this year. If things bloom, great. If not, even better! I haven't looked at the daylilies in a couple of days because it's been raining, and the garden is a muddy mess, but I won't be surprised to find a few more scapes. If there are multiple scapes on some of them, I may cut all but one off. If they are stunted, I'll probably cut those off too. And if the plant looks bad, the scape will go! I just hate the thought of doing that!

Christine, that is probably when I'll get my first blooms too! We can bring up the rear! When everyone else is trying to get their gardens cleaned up before winter, we'll be enjoying our first blooms!

Alex, I can't remember where you posted about TAL OF GASCONE but there may be hope for a bloom. I found a scape on mine this evening and I wouldn't have expected it at all!

I have scapes on historics and one munson seedling I bought last year.
None of the seedlings I started from seed last year have scapes though a few are getting very big.
I think I am more looking more forward to the seedlings blooming cause you really don't know what your going to get until they do.
