The Cool Kids are bright and colorful Anna!

The toothy one's are pretty Ed and Debra. I really like the thinner white fringe on the flowers.

Ohhh, love them all Valerie. The first one I find really interesting, is that pewter/dark gray? So different looking. Thumbs up

The last one Larry Hurray! The yellow on the relief makes it stand out against the lighter watermark. Looks good. The first one has very nice, bright color. I can see why you liked it.

Nan, my garden has mostly started going the other way now. While a few are yet to begin, several are down to the last flowers. I have to deal with the fact that I can't keep going at this pace and have started taking out a few before they actually finish blooming.

Need to know the thoughts of other people regarding branching and bud counts- I have some with amazing branching that will sometimes open two or three blooms at once. Compare that with others that only have one bloom at a time. Those that open multiple flowers can fall from the weight, especially if the flowers are larger or if there is a heavy rain. I have several of the branched ones that tend to decrease in size rapidly, while many of the others tend to remain the original size much longer. I haven't noticed that the ones with better branching actually bloom any longer than the others, although they do have more buds, and also a better probability of having too many open blooms that interfere with each other. I do realize that for the judges table, those that are better branched are more likely to win, but as for practicality???

I had been coerced into breeding for better branching, but I am having second thoughts.... Comments welcome.

Deryll,
I guess it depends if the branches are the same height or not?
Here is a fantastic pic popular recently:

To me, it looks neat and tidy as the branching is all at the top.
Some of my own seedlings branch halfway down the scape so would look really messy next to this one.

I also have one that nosegays like you describe, blooming 3 at a time on the same not-very-branched scape, at the same height.
Thumb of 2023-07-20/plasko20/54d0c0
That one does not last long but is cool to look at when it does its thing.
Although no scapes yet this year from it. Glare

Flowers are fireworks in slow motion to me. Do you want them all to go off at once or a sustained pop...pop fireworks show? Different people have different preferences. Probably a mix of both is best. Thumbs up

For me, branching is only one part of the entire presentation of the plant. Tons of branches with flowers blooming in the foliage or so close together that they cannot open well, is not attractive. It's a plant by plant thing for me. Fewer branches with a lovely bouquet effect at peak bloom, and rebloom will get me every time with the shorter ones. Only two this morning of note.

As many people have stated before, branching and bud count are important, but it is the placement and spacing of those buds and branches that are the really important things.

OK, so this is what I am talking about. This yellow seedling has that candelabra branching that the daylily judges seem to love. This one has 48 buds that I counted on one scape, and it may yet produce a few more. It can open multiple blooms at once, and they tend to size down faster. Some of these plants with more open blooms at one time can get pulled over by the weight, especially in hard rain conditions.

Thumb of 2023-07-20/Deryll/e727be

Thumb of 2023-07-20/Deryll/64e111

And this is Orange Clown. It tends to be more top branched and opens one bloom at a time. Those blooms tend to remain larger longer.

Thumb of 2023-07-20/Deryll/657ff2

Thumb of 2023-07-20/Deryll/49308f

Now, when making crosses, people are telling me to go for the candelabra branching with more buds because those win shows.... but I really like the Orange Clown habit of just one big flower at a time, even with fewer buds. It seems that they both bloom about the same length of time.

Since I really don't have a business where I sell plants, it is just mostly for my own pleasure, but I also don't want criticism for them not being good enough. It's just very confusing! And that is why I have an acre of daylilies!!!
