Deryll - That last post had so many great seedlings. You are getting really great at this hybridizing hobby!

Elyce - This Yoga Man X Stenc. Inf seedling looks good, but I like the earlier one you posted even better. I love the Dancing Flamingo X Jefferson Airplane kids! Your purples with watermarks are very nice too!

I'm in the late season now, so only a few more seedlings to bloom. Here are some from the past couple of days:

Kiss of Paradise X Facemaker
Thumb of 2023-07-08/shive1/476f00

August Frost X Winter's Angel has gotten taller than ever (40 inches). This four-year-old had bud counts in the 30s and 40s in the past, but in this strange season, bud counts are only in the 20s. I need to line it out this fall.

Here are some kids from the seedling above that are late bloomers. I like that it can throw round ones and narrow ones.:

Amazing seedlings being posted! Congratulations everyone! My seedlings are just getting started here.

Debra, I have noticed the same thing here. I, too, am having disappointing bud count on seedlings that had good bud count previous years. The weather this year has been so wacky, and I guess it has had an effect. Thumbs down

I am pleased with these two which represent small yet important steps forward in my applique program...

While I am mainly working away from purple with appliques, I did do one cross with purple last year. This is a FFE from that cross and it is being dramatic by going poly. What has got my attention is the spackled applique on the sepals. That is pretty unique-- in fact I don't recall ever seeing that before...
Thumb of 2023-07-09/Dennis616/1ed0ae

I am also working a bit on pinks and this 6" tet has several nice qualities including and especially a very good 4-way scape.

But here is a subsequent bloom, at end of day, and it's not so nice, and so the hybridizer consternations and conundrums continue...

I actually did one dip cross last year

Late afternoon
This 7" bloom actually looks pretty decent faded

This has been such a strange year. First, spring sickness the worst ever. Now I am seeing blotchy blooms to an almost unbelievable extent. Even blooms known to be resistant show it terribly. I blame the Canadians. I experienced weeks of smoke haze here from the Canadian wildfires. We even had air quality warnings. I am certain the smoke landed on developing buds and created blotches. A little-known danger of second-hand smoke! LOL! Hilarious!

It's early into my bloom season, but I think I'm seeing the same thing here, branching & budcounts down not only on sdlgs but on reg stuff in the display garden too. Probably to be expected with the drought last summer/fall/winter, long warm fall, crazy up and down temps after thaw, terrible spring sickness here too and now excessive rain. Cloudy, seems we've rarely seen the sun. Some are starting to grow the lower branches but I doubt the budcounts will be up by much. I'm glad for my previous years of records for planning to line certain ones out. They stay lined until they prove themselves again, if not then the compost pile isn't very far away.

Debra, the near white is really pretty! I love sdlgs that can go in any direction you cross them.

Nice variegated Orion! I was thinking of you yesterday when checking my vari sdlgs. There's a couple I call 1/2 & 1/2's, leaves are 1/2 green 1/2 yellow. It's really funny to see the scape do the same with a clear line between the two colors going up the scape then green buds on the green side and yellow on the yellow side! I'll try to get an image whenever this rain stops.

Nice applique's Dennis! Love seeing the different colors and the sepal spackleing.

A few sdlgs open today...busy digging day so not much time to do images.
this is a previous keeper applique sdlg, as you can see I'm still stuck on the purples Smiling For now, there should be a few pinks with app's in one of the keeper beds.

Hi Char,
I know what you mean.
My prolif from that seedling last year, now growing outside, is currently showing half-and-half on quite a few leaves:
Thumb of 2023-07-10/plasko20/202631

Here is the current scape there:
Thumb of 2023-07-10/plasko20/a16049

The variegation is definitely not so stable. Even on the same fan the pattern changes seemingly at random depending on what mood the plant is in.

Not surprised that this seedling (grown from seed 2021, planted last year) opened a bloom this morning... FFE... but I was surprised by how large it is. Also, lovely fragrance.

Would anyone else say this is possibly bitone? Is there enough shade range between petals and sepals?

You might want to unfurl a sepal to compare color before declaring a bitone...just sayin' Whistling

Before the sepals curled, earlier in the morning, there was more contrast between sepals and petals... at this point, I was more of the mindset that it does 'not' have enough contrast. Thinking

Just looking for another point of view. Shrug!

adknative,
It does bring up the question of what is enough contrast difference to say it is a bitone?

Thanks Debra! The pink got a step closer to a name after holding up perfectly to the ridiculous amount of rain we had today.
Orion, as far as the changes to the striping of the variation I like it as long as it stays variegated. My 1/2 & 1/2's have stayed 1/2 & 1/2. Are the buds on yours variegated (striped) or is one side of the terminal "V" all green the other all yellow following the divide line on the scape?

Another vote for the lighter Pink Stripes x Gilded Dragonfly. Interesting mix of colors in the image. Thumbs up

Hi Char,
I took a look just now.
On the bud I can maybe see a hint on the tip of the bud being yellow a little but nothing obvious following the half-half line. Yet, anyhow. Shrug!
