Planted my little Double Yield cucumber seedlings. There were eight of them. Planted eight seeds and eight seeds came up. Then I watered all the cucumbers. Seedlings as well as the others. I gave these seedlings tomato cages to climb up on, the same triangle ones I use for most of my tomatoes. So I am hoping they do good and grow fast. I know it is awfully late but why not? Not much to loose.

I have plenty of those Double Yield seeds left for next spring so if they don't work out now they can be planted again next year.

Looks like it's Cucumber time. Just picked four and counted over 50 that will be ready to pick in the next day or two. This is so late for cucumbers for me but I'll take whatever I can. Cucumber limeade and Cucumber relish is right around the corner. Also just picked half a plastic grocery bag full of tomatoes and Purple and yellow beans. Second batch of peas are over two foot tall now and have flowers. New lettuce and spinach rows are up. Peppers are finally now setting fruit. Second batch of purple beans are loaded with flowers and the beans are just starting. Got one cantaloupe almost ready to pick and three mystery melons/watermelons coming along nicely. Why is it that the largest fruits have to be on a trellis high up and be in need of a sling?

Karen, you must have planted your fall peas earlier than mine as mine are quite short yet. But growing nicely. And I am surprised your cucumbers are so late. I have been picking cucumbers steady for a long time now, loose track of when they started. I already picked some cantaloupes and have more coming soon. And your purple and yellow beans sound great. I am growing beans in both those colors also.

I need to remember to pick cucumbers tomorrow. Should have picked today but time got away from me.

Won't be picking anything today as it's pouring out and we are under another flood watch alert. Could get another 1-2 inches of rain. At least I don't have to water.

Love looking at your harvests!! I have maters and some cukes and a few watermelons. Don't know what kind. All my veggies came from the swap at my house in May. There were pepper, cuke and watermelon plants left here. Then I had a six pack of tomatoes from critter and a couple others. I can't see the labels now. I do know there was a chocolate Cherokee, a yellow pear, and then there is a large yellow one. Have been yummy so far.

Jan, doesn't really matter what kinds. They are fresh home grown veggies and that is what counts.

Celeste, I like to have a lot of tomatoes as I share with neighbors and friends. Sometimes it does feel like they are endless. Hilarious!

Hey Karen, raining here also. Same system that is over your way. I am in the North Shore of Nassau County on Long Island. Can see the Sound from my house. Fortunately I am on higher ground so never have any concerns about flooding. But not going to be out in the garden today picking cucumbers. Or anything else either.

Creative Jungle Technique is what I use. I grow mine straight up on fencing or tomato cages. This year because of all the extra tomatoes I had to erect a frame for the cucks. I had a bunch of 15 foot aluminum poles so I built a frame work inside one of my planter beds.

Well, much to my surprise the rain ended and now it is trying to clear up. Still didn't get my cucumbers picked, I guess I will be doing that tomorrow.

Around here I keep my cucumbers off the ground as much as possible. Saves space.

The place I have been planting my cucumbers for the past two years is in the backyard along a path which goes along thru one of my daylily beds. I call it cucumber ally. I trellis. I don't have enough room to just let them sprawl but probably wouldn't even if I did. I like to keep the cukes off the ground.

The longer trellis shown on the left is about 12 feet so it runs the entire bed. The little section to the right is 4 feet.

So I have to get creative to fit more in and I planted a late crop of cucumbers in a raised series of beds I have near my kitchen.

This is the first year I have tried a second cucumber crop so we will see how well that works. I have the bottom ones on tomato cages to give them something to climb but haven't done much with the ones up top in that skinny bed. I will probably pound some posts in and hang string for them to climb.

Oh and here are the baby cuke seedlings I planted yesterday. They have tomato cages to climb.

Karen, your cucumber vines look so nice and healthy. Mine are already starting to look ratty. Last year they lasted till mid September. That was really late as usually they need to be pulled out about the end of August.

This is why I decided to try a second crop. To see if I can have cucumbers late in the season after those spring planted ones are done for.

Ok, Celeste. Your turn. Let's see your cucumber setup and how you manage to get so many cukes. nodding

Rita my growing season is two months late this year. Wasn't able to get anything in the ground because of the cold weather. The garden wasn't planted until the last week of May and first week of June. Last year I had the garden ready to go in March and planted the first week of April with greenhouse covers. I was picking cucumbers and tomatoes at the end of June. Just been a strange growing season so far. I also pulled about 8 cucumber plants because they got infested with some type of wilt that made all the leaves completely wilt over night. Never found any bugs so I'm guessing it was something in the soil.

I think I planted about the first week of May or so. I never use row covers so that is about when I plant. But I know I got my tomatoes in extra early this year. April 29th. Didn't cover them or anything, just planted them. They did great.

But your garden looks good even if your harvests are starting later than normally.

I can see the difference between Green Tiger and Caserta. Green Tiger has those heavy stripes. Caserta is light green background with dark green mottling. Both of these look to be much prettier than your average dark green common zucchini.

And here is one of the little Poquito's just planted out.
Thumb of 2013-08-13/Newyorkrita/98b55b

So you might be thinking what difference does it make? It does to me. I want my zucchini to be more appealing and prettier than those dark green types you see commonly at the supermarket.
