I have the Chlorophytum "Fireflash" I forgot that it was related to spider plants. It even bloomed for me, you can see the bloom in the picture.

Thumb of 2013-08-09/extranjera/474fc6

Now I'm wondering why the regular spider plants always die on me since this one is doing fine outside in the garden. Maybe I've been babying them too much? or more likely watering them too much since they were in pots.

Love that photo Jonna!

I would think spider plants should enjoy your area....could be watering, if you say you may have overwatered..or maybe make your soil more fast draining if it is prone to overwatering. I grow my plants outdoors in hanging containers all year long, and can't seem to have enough water, but it has always been drier here too.
Or maybe use pots a size smaller, since the plants love being pot bound anyways.

Shady, im shure that was a bonnie, hopefully it is still there and you can grab it.

OK, I went back and got her. She was in a nice clay pot so it was worth the $3 mainly because it is a variation I don't have- a green border not a yellow/white border like all my others. But I haven't seen pictures to compare. Is she bonny, I mean, of course she's bonny, but is she "Bonnie"? The curl is not strong, but definitely NOT the straight out leaves I have.

That's a really cool looking curly plant, can't help with the ID though.

Tarev, I had the spider plant in the guest b'room, it's really humid in there and there is a screened skylight. I think I should have left off watering it at all for awhile, because of the humidity and the damp environment.

If I see one I like I'll try again but in a drier area or maybe with more sun and air movement.

Thanks, Ramhel. She'll have a special place with some bright sun in my garden. Among all the straight leaves Spider Plants, I am anxious to watch her grow!

I'm really surprised that the other plants haven't made it into the "trade" - especially your first picture, Rhamel, with the larger white bloom, as well as the upright species in the ground. Very cool.

Rhamel, when you get your camera fixed, if you have access to any of those plants, we'd sure love them in the data base. But Purple was right, you can't post pics in the data base that aren't yours, or at least that have the owner's permission to use (I'd love it if you were able to get that permission, though!). I know, it makes it tough when you don't have the plant sitting next to you... Blinking

I looked into the plant file and there are quite a few pictures of the spider in there. I have a little problem with getting information from the plant file. Not sure what I am doing wrong. I am going to go there now and see if I can find what I am looking for. Confused

Oh, please. Never??? You could be the next person to discover a totally new breed, develop your own cultivar or find one on a deserted island.... if you make it a goal to find these plants, you will find them.

However, if it is not important to you, you will probably have them thrown at you, lol!

But you are far too smart to say "never". Life will be so much more interesting if you say "when".

I agree, at your age, you have decades of interesting plants ahead of you, and, I think, the love and talent to do great "plant things" someday. You already know more important stuff than I did (at a much older age too,) from the internet, without having to kill a ton of plants to learn a few things at all. If somebody has one, especially somewhere in the same country, there's no reason you shouldn't either, someday. It can happen, you don't know where you'll go, or who you'll meet out there in life.

More unusual plants can be found at mom'n'pop stores where somebody there loves house plants. Botanical gardens sometimes have sales of things they propagate. Trading/for postage in the mail, as you know, is a great way to get cool stuff. So many 'annuals' can make great house plants. Swaps! Soon you'll be able to drive yourself to something like that, those are a blast!

Dog Lover
Last year I saw Hirt's at eBay had a collection of several different spider plants that were not potted. It was around late July-August. I wish I could remember how many different types they offered. I passed on those and bought a nice curly one and a wide leafed green one. They had a reverse variegated one can Ocean, I believe. I did pass on that one. Hirt's is also now selling on Amazon.

The curly one I purchased is now doing better with more light thanks to pupleinopp/Tiffany and was repotted earlier tonight after following Lin's advice to check the root system. The roots were packed like people in coach airplane flights, or, uh, okay - maybe sardines!

Hello everyone!

I saw some videos on YouTube about the various varieties of the Spider Plant.

I own the Chlorophytum Comosum variegato Vittatum.

Some questions about the Chlorophytum Comosum (Spider Plant) plant:

1- What is the difference between the variegated varieties Vittanum and Atlantic? Do they look the same, do they have different sizes of plant and leaf size?

2- What is the difference between the variegated varieties Variegatum and Ocean? Do they look the same, do they have different sizes of plant and leaf size?

3- Can you recommend a website where they talk about the differences of the Chlorophytum Comosum variety?

I await your reply!

Greetings from Italy!
