If your cross the typical
garden hardy hibiscus with its wild cousin, you get an insanely fast growing, hardy offspring. Flowered in its second year and got 3 feet tall, now has 40+ shoots!

Keith, i would love to get a rooted cutting of the seed parent and of the off spring. For some reason hibiscuses are not all that easy to come by here. Have to turn to the net for them.

I have started many things from seeds, but never tried to grow hibiscuses from seeds. I am willing to try though.

I treat hardy Hibiscus seeds as warm germinators, with fairly good results. I get nearly 100% germination in hybrids with lots of H. moscheutos heritage.

Now that I have put them in the sun, the leaves are bronze. I haven't yet taken a new picture.

That's ironic that you can't find hardy hibiscus in Southern California. Here in Missouri, the only place that carries hybrids is Lowe's, and half their varieties are from Monrovia Nursery in So Cal. My mom worked for Monrovia Nursery in the 50's, so it's been around for a long time. Maybe they only sell wholesale...

Thanks for this link! I bought an end of season, droughted, cut back, past
blooming plant at Lowe's cheap last year, and it lived. It's labeled Cherry Brandy, but that's not in the Database. However, it is in this video, so now I know it exists, and the name may be correct. No flowers yet...

I finally found verification of the "Hardy Hibiscus" Cherry Brandy and submitted it for inclusion in the Database. I have foliage pictures waiting to be posted upon approval of my addition. As you know, flower pictures may not be available for another 1 1/2 to 2 months.

Dave,
:hurray:
I bought my first ones only last summer. (6 varieties - I started with 3 at full price, then stumbled over 3 more at the end of the season for less than $6 each!) They all have buds - I can't wait!
Do you know which variety yours is?
