I took this to day, it looked good when it snowed also.

Seedfork said:For me it's oak seedlings, I pulled up over sixty in one small bed just yesterday.
I wondered the same thing, but I had no knowledge of bird parts.

Definition:" A bird's crop is a compartment of muscle tissue that birds use to store and soften their food before it moves on to be processed by the gizzard."

Oak seedlings are supposed to be there... the squirrels likely buried them and weren't hungry enough to retrieve them....
Last winter... A squirrel went down my entire patch of pecans that I'd planted and dug them all back up... *&!

Re: crop... My bad... I forget that people aren't familiar with anatomy. I grew up processing home-grown chickens...

My take on the intact berries... is that the crop had processed some of them...

Cyanide is scary, and those poor birds aren't equipped to handle it.

At my house, every berry has been harvested from the remaining nandina (the ones I haven't grubbed out yet). They'll be gone before the next poisonous offering...

They grow in clusters so it would be easy to remove them. Thumbs up

This paragraph is from Wikipedia:

Toxicity[edit]

All parts of the plant are poisonous, containing hydrocyanic acid, and could potentially be fatal if ingested. The plant is placed in Toxicity Category 4, the category "generally considered non-toxic to humans,"[4] however, the berries are considered toxic to cats and grazing animals.[5] The berries also contain alkaloids such as nantenine, which is used in scientific research as an antidote to MDMA.[6][7] Birds are generally not affected by these toxins and will disperse the seeds through their droppings. However, excessive consumption of the berries will kill birds such as Cedar Waxwings.[8]

Hopefully what you saw was just an isolated incident. I have never had a problem, but I do not ever see Cedar Waxwings.

Thanks Ann; there's a whole table of forced bulbs under fluorescent lights in the cool basement...they are about to bloom, when they do, they get moved upstairs for our indoor enjoyment.

I remember your photos of all those you were forcing. Impressive & obviously a labor of love. You went to a lot of work doing all that. But I also know who is enjoying spring even if it hasn't arrived in central Illinois! Big Grin That's one way to chase the winter blues away eh? Thumbs up

Is it an early bloomer or did you have some warm weather? Looks like winter interest to me.

Boy that Jetfire sure grabs me. I really like that one & the name is so apt. The Earlicheer can't be beat for floriferous can they? Those poor stalks get so heavy with blooms they nearly fall over.

So I want to move all these daffs that I've found scattered here & there. What do I do? Wait until the foliage dies back & then dig & move them?
I've found some that won't even bloom b/c they were planted & then things like hedge plants or azaleas grew out over them so they are not getting enough sun.

Susan, the tree is supposed to bloom in 'late winter', about like witch-hazels because it's in that family.

Ann, if you want the bulbs to gather energy for next year it's best to wait 'till they are done with that process before you disturb them...but if the leaves are buried in the dark and they don't bloom anyway, it might not matter that much when you do it Shrug!

Thanks Dirt! I hope you will post more pictures when it blooms, I do not believe I have ever seen one before.

Ann, even in the shade they usually grow some foliage right? If so you might want to wait for the sap to run back into the bulb, and dig them after the foliage turns yellow. Since you are in Florida you could store them in the refrigerator till fall and plant them out then for beautiful blooms in the spring? or winter...... Whistling

Thanks both of you. Yes, the ones that are not blooming have foliage sparse as it may be but otherwise I would not have been able to find them. I'm going to put markers where they are so I can dig them after the foliage dies. We have pretty dry summers here so I'm thinking I can go ahead & plant them in their new spots & just let nature take her course & they will bloom at the appropriate time rather than to refrigerate them until fall.
Hilarious! Yes, Susan, winter to you, spring to us. I have a friend in Va. Bch. who says it was beautiful today ~~~ light jacket weather but sigh..... tomorrow rain then sleet/freezing rain & 4" of snow. I know you guys are so sick of winter!
