Doris I use a time release fertilizer I get from Walmart called garden expert it seems to work really well I have tried others and this one works the best for me. Just a teaspoon for the smaller ones and about a tablespoon for the bigger ones and then I water normal.I have blooms on about 70% of mine right now.I am no expert just a learn as you go thing.
Thumb of 2011-08-11/rucky/aa26af And your right they do love the heat! its a good thing because it been over 100 everyday and about 60 to 80% humidity here kinda like a rain forest. Speaking of that I took the grand kids to Moody Gardens in Galveston a couple of weeks ago and one of their features is a rain forest and I was walking around drooling on all of the neat plants when I came up on a plant that looked familiar then it dawned on me it was a Desert Rose. There was 2 of them and neither one looked real healthy I wanted to dig em up and take them home to doctor em up a little but my wife said they would probably frown on that. All the rest of the plants looked great but the DR's looked sick I don't think I'll be paying $45 dollars a person to go back and check on them though...Ron

Marie - we have several blooming now and most have been blooming all summer. A friend in Fountain Hills says her's are not blooming either. I wonder why that is.

Harold - your 'ugly' ones are most likely crosses with a species called Adenium somalensis. They have the narrow leaves and the streaky blooms.

Somalense crispum has folded flowers, and stripes. It's more difficult to keep, being prone to rot.

Here's a classic crispum flower, the one in the middle. Crispums give stripes to flowers that are crossed with obseums and others.
