Ditto to what Debbie said, except that for me, they rebloom better (and get fewer mealy bugs) if planted in the ground.

I see, will I need to dig them up in the fall? or will they over winter in my area? Thank you so much for getting back to me.

Hi All - just discovered this forum. I am going to be getting some amaryllis bulbs in a trade soon. I live in zone 9a and plan on planting them outdoors - especially since I have plenty of bare areas to fill in with my new beds. For those of you who have amaryllis in the ground - What I would like to see is long, overview photos of your gardens and how you incorporate your amaryllis with other plants. Thanks!!

Hi, soils,
Some of these will go in the ground.....not sure how we want to do it yet. I am in zone 8a....we are going to test a few bulbs this winter to see if they can handle temperatures here :)

Good luck! 9 a should be a perfect zone!

I never did a whole lot of planning, just tucked them in here and there, where they would get afternoon shade. This is one of the more organized areas and they fit well in the strip between the porch and the sidewalk.

Kelli - that is a nice looking strip. Since amaryllises are not sprawling and stays somewhat confined, they do make good candidates for tucking here and there.

Sandra - nice collection you have there. I hope I get the chance to try some amaryllis - though I think the box that I was supposed to get from a trade got lost out there in postal-space. And the odd thing is, the box I sent in exchange showed that it was delivered, but the recipient never saw it. Sandra - are you the same sanandreyas70 in DG? If so, the johnsonii from you are leafing up nicely. Smiling

Dianne,

Yes, i am the same from DG. I am happy they are leafing well...i hope you get spring blooms...but if not until the next spring it will be worth the wait. I am excited about the belladonna....i hope they do well here in TX. I am sorry you lost another trade...sometimes post is just slow....i did send my daughter a box of items (not plants) once and it arrived in a month!!

Hi all,
Haven't had a bloom in a while but I've made a big decision to put my many babies into the soil! When I bring them out in pots they rot because of all our rain (days on end) and when I leave them inside in north light, they stop blooming. So I'm making a hippie garden to plant them in spring/dig in fall. The question I have is, will they be okay in full southern light for the summer? We are NORTH (see zone) so there are lots of days without sun and the sun is not as strong as the south when it does shine, but I'd love advice before I dig on Monday.

They can stand full sun here if they are outside all the time. They should love it in your zone.Expect a little sunburn to begin with.

I made my hippie garden yesterday. It is exclusively hippies and I will dig them and pot them in fall. I hope to get more to bloom this way. I put some gypsum in for drainage and it poured last night so I should see if they rot or not real soon.

I'm betting those will do very well once they adjust to the outside.
