Kathy, I am by no means an expert, but did you have these outside in pots already? Were they already in hot sun? And you may want to cover them when it's full sun with an old bed sheet instead of tarp. Make a lean to sort of like this.

Nothing major, a sheet stapled or nailed into the side of the house, with two or three sticks stapled or tied to the corners and middle if needed. When it starts getting hot and burning sun, around noon, just bang the sticks into the ground. But not too deep, so that you can pull them up and lean them against the house when it's not so hot and sunny, (mornings and evenings). In other words, like a retractable awning. When they used to the outside and start perking up, then just take the sheet down.

Misti, the ones that you have inside need to be acclimated to the outdoors since it is already so hot outside. Are they in air condition now? Take the ones that you are planning on putting out (or just try it on one of them) and put them outside in the morning, but be sure and put them under a covered porch or carport. Slowly scoot them into the sun gradually until they get used to it. All of mine are in a place that gets full sun until about 1 PM and then shade for the rest of the day.

When I buy new bulbs in the fall this is how I do it.
Plant them inside in pots. (They usually arrive in October)
Let them grow and bloom inside during the winter
After all blooming is over and no chance of frost , I bring them outside and plant them. But, it is still cool, (50's & 60's) not the hot summer time (now we are in the 90's and 100's)

But JT can tell you better than me if that makes a difference.

ok Debbie, thank you I will. Yes they are in air conditioning right now in a sunny window. Should I be concerned about winter with such young ones? These are ones I started from seed a year ago. They are oh about 4 or 5 inches tall (leaves)

Oh that looks cool. Of course they were in northern light inside for 2 years and then again this past week on the porch. It appears that they are in full sun all AM and noon then in shade in the afternoon. I will look for a sheet and sticks!

Misti, I've never grown from seed. So JT will have to tell you that. But once I plant mine outside, I never have to worry about them again. I don't cover them or anything. They have been thru snows, freezes, storms, and what ever else we get down here in the south. But they always snap back. And you are about even with me in weather conditions.

The only problem that I have with mine are the Loppers. BIG black grasshoppers that will each the foliage to the nub. I am in the process now of figuring out what I can do to totally get rid of them. But I think that is just a problem in Louisiana, not Texas.

LOL Kathy, take a pic.

I hate them. And that is very unusual for me. I love lizards (I DONT touch them) and all the little creatures that a garden brings. But these heathens are awful. I'm tired of catching them and then I have to kill them YUK YUK> My garden is my place of peace and I don't appreciate the invasion . Sad

Yeh, I have japanese beetles like you have loppers. I hate them to death! Grumbling

Well, I was wrong. The hippies are planted in never ending sun (pretend the south). And the sticks are bendy and the sheet isn't big enough. Looks like my last camping experience. Rolling on the floor laughing

I have some small ones in pots on the porch. I keep them there so they don't get lost in the grass and weeds and junk. They get partial shade. When they do get transplanted to the yard, I plan to do it outside of the hottest time of the year.

Misty, this is the link to DG plantfiles. I'm not sure what varieties you have, but here you can look them up and check the hardiness of them by name. http://davesgarden.com/guides/...

And here you can find your zone. http://www.garden.org/zipzone/

I believe you are in zone 7 and it says they are hardy to 7, so they should make it.

Dave and Trish have just announced that they will soon have a new gardening site.I assume this new site will be more like the old DG site.Cubit owners will have the option of moving or staying here.Cubits will not be closing but some cubits will disappear.I will read more this evening and post whatever I find out.

ok,according to Dave's post the new site will open early next week, probably Tuesday or Wednesday.I will be moving all three cubits to the new site. The format there will be discussion forum and so will do away with changing the threads when they get too long.It will also keep everything together without the need for multiple threads.I will post a link as soon as Dave gives the ok.I will also be posting the link at BGI and on Facebook.'m sure Dave will have it here in red capital letters so no one should get lost.

Hi, everyone! Does anyone know why an amaryllis would not bloom in it's second year? The leaves have been healthy, but that's all that showed up last fall. They're still there. They are in pots, and I put them outside when it warmed up in the spring. Should I just plant them? Bring them back in again in the fall?
