Hello to all! This will be my first time to grow Amaryllis, and my first time to join this A&H chat forum. I have been growing some orchids indoors and some houseplants. Have seen most of you in other forums as well in ATP Smiling

So yesterday at the OSH (Orchard Supply Hardware) I got an amaryllis bulb. The label says it is an Apple Blossom. So here's keeping fingers crossed that I can make this grow nicely indoors.

Here is how I set her up for now:

Inside a glass vase, sitting on hydroton rocks, and the rocks are sitting on top of water gel beads

If this blooms well, I may get some more Big Grin

Happy Monday to everyone!

Hi Tarev! I am one of the addicts. There are soooo many beauties!! Mine are a few years old and in hiding (dark and no water) till December.

Hi Kathy! So when you keep them in the dark and waterless, is that because you want to delay the bloomtime?

Well yes it forces them to bud. But they need a dormancy period like they would get in the ground. Unfortunately they don't all bloom again for me but some years they do well. I'm hoping!

Must be a flaw in my personality that I try to grow temperamental plants!
Tarev, I tried an experiment this year. I grew them in the ground in summer like I was in the deep south. In the past they have rotted for me in pots but they didn't in the ground, despite ridiculous amts of rain (and floods) this year. They were in full sun. No one bloomed (they bloom for me in winter) but I'm hoping I get more to bloom this winter because of their new routine. We will see!

I think a big part of the pleasure of amaryllis is the bulb watch and how fast and tall they grow. the anticipation with the final WOW when you finally get the open bloom.

i am currently growing 55 for sale in 2 markets and is so surprising the difference between Holland bulbs and southern hemisphere.
yours are looking great good luck.

Looking at my amaryllis in bloom, just wondering, I see its stamen with the yellow pollen and filament, what is that elongated thing in the middle that is growing along with the filament? I did not see that elongated pinkish part in the other blooms of the same plant.. Or is that the housing of the pollen?

With the elongated pinkish part:

No elongated pinkish part:
