Typically planting depth refers to top of the bulb up, but no worries. I've planted Daffodils much more shallow than recommended and they were fine. I've read that shallow planting allows for faster increase, but not sure if that's truly the case. In some areas with hard to dig soil, I plant on the shallow side, then add an extra deep layer of mulch to compensate, and that works just fine too. Those big Daffodil bulbs can be a real booger to plant at the recommended depth!

I've also planted Daffs this late in years past, and they bloomed the following spring just fine. They were a bit later to bloom than usual, but corrected themselves the following spring, so I believe you'll see a colorful show come spring Smiling

My thoughts too.
I have clay soil and plant in September or when its been raining. I add compost to the holes.
I plant 3 to 5 bulbs at a time. The trench method has never been used here because my gardens arent set up that way.
I also plant lilies that way. I dig a wide hole with a flat bottom and place 3 bulbs in.

Thanks for the info! I tip my hat to you. Thumbs up I thought they meant from the bottom of the bulb.

Marilyn, don't they know how to get us, sending the catalogs out while spring bulbs are blooming! I love it too, carrying the catalog around the garden, considering what I should add to make next spring even better.

I wonder what other methods gardeners use to add new bulbs to the garden. I keep photos of areas where I want to add bulbs as well as plants because they sometimes spaces overlap.I keep notes in my garden notes folder.

I struggle with that too JoAnn. I was happily surprised at how few bulbs I sliced up planting the new ones; thankfully most were little bulbs that didn't require much depth and will work well planted on top of others. I've been thinking I may try plugging some annuals into areas where I want to add bulbs, then in fall just yank them out and replace them with bulbs. I had tried setting containers into those areas, but couldn't stop myself from moving them around as the growing season progressed to make them look just right, LOL.

Neal: When I started gardening here 7 years ago I had never been faced with the space problem. I have a perennial and bulb mixed garden because I like the naturalized look.
I used to place plastic spoons where I wanted bulbs. I did this in spring because the perenns would mature and cover the spoons and I could easily see them in fall after garden clean up but before new bulbs came.
This worked well for a few years but now perenns are really big and its hard to wedge bulbs around them.
Like you the small bulbs are no problem but slicing into a lily is another matter.
This is a Hosta tagging with plastic spoons May 2009.

I added 140 liliy varieties to 3 gardens in fall of that year I think.
