Buffalo is setting a record for November. There are many cities that have sent ambulances and snow plows and front loaders just to clear the main roads.
Emergency rules are in effect but there are some drivers who ignore the warnings because they have 4 wheel drive and think they are Rambos in their powerful machines.. Stupid because they dont have the under clearance for 5 feet of snow.
News item this morning , a 46 year old man was found dead in his car which was buried in 12 feet of snow.Sad.
East of where I live ( which got a trace of snow ) they have huge snow blower trucks that clear roads ,they post flags at the tops of snowbanks and at intersections so people can see where the road is.
In a few days we expect day temps in the 50's. Buffalo will be under a flood watch then. This Elnino affect winter is just horrible.

That's terrible Jo Ann!

What stinks are all the dead plants. It's always like this after the first killing freeze. Everything stinks for about 2 days.

I had no idea! Thanks for informing me.

My parents once lived a short distance from a cabbage farm and with one early freeze the whole area stunk so I guess it's similar to your experience.

Wow! Those photos in Buffalo reminds me of how it was when we live in Winnipeg during a blizzard! Such snow drifts and accumulation which stays all the way to May over there..hope it will slowly melt if it can later rather than pile up higher and higher.

Take care folks affected by this very early winter scenario. So easy to collapse with over exertion, let alone driving in slippery roads.

I can't imagine even considering how to try and shovel 100" of snow. It's beyond my comprehension.

I wonder if home owners just go to the second floor and start shoveling.
Another scene. Open your garage door to a wall of snow, where do you toss the stuff when its 2 feet over your head.
This was on my GD FacePage
Its her friends door.

I guess they must know by now to keep shovels indoors so they can try and shovel out but the only places I can think of (to put the snow) would be the bathtub or sinks.

Why bother with the garage door unless the streets are plowed and just how can they know if the streets are plowed when the snow is 8 or 9' high? Maybe a second story window might reveal it.

Would people still be trying to get milk and bread with all that snow? Who delivers to stores in these conditions? How do employees get to work? My head hurts from thinking about it.

I was just reading a story about why snow plows are taking so long. It's because there is no place to put the snow!

Anne. In the North country they have huge snow blower trucks that shoot the snow off the road.

I have had to deal with over 3 feet a few time and that was hard enough, Do not even want to think about how hard that amount of snow would be.

When we used to live in Winnipeg and we get that kind of volume of snow, the following day we have to quickly push, blow or create a path, otherwise it will be tougher later as temps continue to dip already in the negative territory. It is easier to move snow around as long as it is still soft, it will be like brick ice later if you don't. As painful and difficult it is to do, no choice, got to move it over especially if it blocks your garage and main entrance. The city sends out its snow removal teams but they prioritize first main thoroughfares, then bus routes, then to suburbia, so pretty much first few hours you are on your own, with the company of fellow neighbors digging out.

As a born and raised western New Yorker I feel it's my job to explain that lake effect snow like they get off Lake Erie is not as hard to deal with as you think. A normal snowstorm covers large area, lake effect blizzards follow wind flow over lake and dump snow in narrow bands. Usually that 3 foot + phenomenon doesn't happen in an area often. Snow is fluffy and wet, packs down to half its depth by the next day. My friend in Buffalo just texted me that she has 5-6 inches where she lives and the snow fell south of the city in Lancaster. It's a bit like Vancouver (but colder) where you can have just a bit of snow but a little ways away is great skiing. My friends in Buffalo are all gearing up to drive towards the snow to go skiing. You have to embrace it. And you stockpile food do if you can't get out its no big deal. I'm more afraid of tornadoes than a blizzard. We bloom where we're planted.

Tarev, you are right on about what happens in Minnesota. Usually after a major snowfall it gets windy and bitter cold, then the snow turns into big drifts. If you don't get out with your shovel or snowblower right away, you regret it. Sometimes I go out during the storm to remove part of the snow so it isn't as deep. Everyone goes to the stores to stock up before the storm. If we get more than 14-15 inches , we just plan to maybe stay in or delay things for anywhere from half a day to a couple days, depending on the conditions. Sometimes stores don't get their deliveries on time during the storms. When we have a lot of snow, there is no where to put it and you can't see around corners and such. We have big piles of snow in parking lots and elsewhere. A couple of years ago in a strip mall near me the pile of snow didn't melt until June and there was a popup garden center next to it.

Forgot to say I can't imagine the volume of snow in NY ... I suppose roofs collapse and all sorts of things happen. My thoughts and prayers are going out to everyone there. Take care!

Playing in the snow is fun of course..kids love the snowball fights..skiers and cross country skiers enjoy that..or if there is a frozen lake or river ice fishing is another fun thing to do....however....anytime you have to do work first to clear your house, in freezing cold..never ever fun..but just have to do it. Or totally losing your traction as you drive since there is black ice ahead and you just suddenly do 360 degree turn and all you can do is pray you do not hit someone else or hurt yourself badly. And even when it finally starts to melt...yuck! I hated the slush and muck..for sure by that time city roads got lots of ice and sand being dribbled everywhere on cleared roads to maintain traction for the vehicles. Then walking on it, back to your house..even if you have a mud room..just hate the yucky mess.

Wishing all the folks affected to take care and always keep safe. Different locations ....different challenges to bear with.
