I had heard Darwin tulips were longer lived in a garden. Hybreds are short lived.
I have had Parrots that were a couple of years but most didnt returne the second season and it sure looked funny to see one or two Angeliques where a nice clump had been.

I replanted my parrot tulips also but I put them in the same spot. So I will have no idea if any of the older ones come up or not.

This is the front garden out by the street. The crocus have started blooming. Next will come the tulips. I have so many different tulips in there. The parrot tulips are planted along the back of that front big wide level, up back near those Belgium block terraces.

My first Dutch Iris blooms of the year, anyone recognize them? The camera will not pick up the purple color, they look blue in the picture but are not.

Newyorkrita,
I can't tell looking at the photos, the purple color is different in each of them. But, it appears Rosario may be a later blooming Iris. Anyhow as ge1836 said, it is a very welcome early splash of color in my garden. Even the buds are so beautiful before they open.

Neal - in answer to your question a week ago - I have had that patch of dutch iris for about 4 years. I thinned it out last year so it is sparser than normal. Dutch irises are one of the few bulbs that come back regularly for me - hence they are still in my garden.

Seedfork - love the yellow and purple iris. Hope they multiply for you.

I got the following bulbs from my sister last year. They are blooming now - any one know what it is? Sparaxis? It is about 1.5 ft tall

soilsandup,
This is my third year with those, they have grown much larger than the first year and multiplied about three or four times in number. I planted more Dutch Iris this year, the picture looks the same, but we shall see.

Thanks Dianne. From your experience and Seedfork having Dutch Iris return, I'm thinking they're more likely to behave as perennials in warmer climates. I think it's interesting that they will survive cold winters to provide a showing the first year, but it seems several of us in colder zones don't see them return after that.

That is a gorgeous purple! Not sure if it's Sparaxis or Ixia, but I believe it's one of the 2. Unfortunately, neither performs well here.

I should never repeat anything based on my memory it appears. I only remembered planting one type of Dutch Iris, but I saved the picture and info that came on the bags and I actually planted two kinds of Dutch Iris three years ago, the one in the picture above (which by the way also looks blue on the package picture) is Miss Saigon. The other type was Eye of the Tiger, so I need to check and see if those are also returning and multiplying. Maybe I will have blooms from those soon.
And I said the Dutch Iris I planted this year looked like the same thing...nahhh. The ones I planted this year were just called a Dutch Iris Mix I planted three bags of 25 each of those, so hopefully I will have several different types blooming maybe early this summer or at least by next year.

I was out today for almost 4 hours - SO wonderful!
uncovered my rhubarb - it's still there.
Found many MORE tulips. my drumstick alliums, and one sprouting thing that looks like an asiatic lily (??) - it's not TIME for that yet and none of my others are up.....

And I set up a new compost bin. Now I have 2.
Raked enough leaves, etc. to top off the older one so glad to have the new one!
They'll go down as it warms up.

SUCH A GOOD DAY!!!!!!

There is hope yet of daffs blooming. This is my trellis garden. It has tulips in front and daffs in back. The daffs finially have buds. Other years I have had those daffs there in full bloom mid March. Not this year.

My Dutch Iris are all developing a second bloom right next to the first bloom, they could have done that before, but I don't remember it.
