Tall Prickly Pears (with habit bush or tree) are very good for a green fence. Eventually you can have a veggie-fence and a fence-defence, too.

That would be fantastic, but ... I don't know how and more, it is outside and can come a rain ...
Well I'll show you some portraits of the little princesses from my story of 'The Sleeping Beauty', published on forum. (The princess mentioned above, is another princess from another story). So, so show them now, or more precisely photos from yesterday but not much change today (today was more a cloudy day):

Justin,
How do you cook those pads. I have seen it done with welding gloves to strip away the large spines and then cooked over an open flame to remove the tiny red spines (the worse). Also the seed pods, come fall is suppose to be good tasting. Myself, I didn't like them but if made into a jam, may be good. My box turtles did love those seed pods.

That's my Austrialin Shepard. She's getting old. About 14 years now. I snapped a picture close up to see into her eyes. She had an eye operation to clear up a ulcer. Came thru well. One of few breeds that have blue eyes. I am sure going to miss her.

Stush,
My MIL adopted an Aussie last year that has bright blue eyes like that. They're stunning for sure.

Only young pads are good to eat.
To be honest, I'm not the one who cooks. But sometimes, I do. I hope I will can take some pictures of how to clean the spines. Maybe next week. And write something about cooking. Maybe will be good a special topic/forum about the cooking vegetable from garden. Smiling

Yes, the opuntia pad are a very good food for turtle. Or for some turtle.

Yes they are beautiful plants, and have a bluish tinge.
I received them, last year, from a neighbor. I planted them there temporarily. They are a bit cramped.
The neighbor said that the mother-plant was brought by his parents from Arizona, many years ago when they moved.
Photos taken today:

I had intended to move them elsewhere. Only it's a problem. One very sharp ... problem.
Thumb of 2014-04-25/Justin/6fa357
Nice texture ... but more dangerous like Opuntia's spines.

I'm a little confused ... now I do not know where to move them in a place that is not dangerous. So for moment, the safest place is where I planted them temporarily. There are more isolated. Shrug!
More, nice leaves ...
Thumb of 2014-04-25/Justin/94f2c7 Thumb of 2014-04-25/Justin/a878db
but have sharp teeth ... that make difficult to pull out the weeds.
I can't say I don't like them, just they are more suitable for those who have more safe room. About Opuntia all persons know to have care, but the sharp of Agava leaf tip are not so visible and so known.

Good Lord. I thought my little Agave's spines (by little, I mean tiny) were sharp and pointy, but those spines make me cringe.
