S-n is pictured as streaked. As you said, tho, it's beautiful.

Exactly. Though, I've heard that blooms can come out a single colour, so I'm hoping. Maybe next year (with hopefully more blooms for comparison) I can determine if the tag is correct. I'm happy with it, of course, I just enjoy knowing the name of it, too.

It's funny how a couple of my tps have slowly unravelled over the last month and are still tight buds, while others, like Choju, have opened/are opening within a week.

Hi Pwinjet,

Shimanishiki can have single colored blooms, and as the plants get older the blooms become more streaked. My Sn did had blooms with 1 color the 1st year. Last year it had 3 blooms, 2 were a single color, and the 3rd bloom had 2 colors.

Your bloom is beautiful, and I look forward to seeing your blooms mature next year.

Tree peonies were a discovery I made just a few years ago. I had no idea they existed until I saw a pic online and fell in love.

Me, too, Zencat. I think it was a pic of Hanakisoi that made me swoon, which was why it was my must-have for last year, and why I bought another when the first wasn't growing well. Sticking tongue out

I'd love a Ten-I now, though it is hard to find up here. There is one seller who had one, but it had no visible tree growth while the nurse root was sprouting. I asked him about it, so he looked at it skeptically and basically said not to get it until next year lol. So, I didn't risk it. However, the other trees I got from him are doing well.

Thanks, Annette. I'm glad you said that. I was surprised the bud started out pink, but now the flower is a brilliant red!

It's usually okay that it takes awhile for flowers to open. But this year...it's taking so loooooooooong!!!

My newly acquired tree peonies started blooming. They were tight buds last week, showed some color yesterday, to pooof, open blooms when I got home from work this evening.

I have serious Peony-envy! I am hoping to get hold of one or two plants this Winter. They are extremely hard to find in South Africa...

Elsa, can you order online? I can't imagine a garden without these or Irises.

I am holding out hope for my tree peonies. No growth at all yet. But they were sorely abused last year and not very robust. Heck, hardly sent up shoots. But I made the mistake of digging up two peonies last year in disgust only to realize later they would have grown from their deep well established roots and tubers even though I had rotted the tops. All herbaceous are doing well and better than well in some cases which for us means starting unfurl leaves. The Itoh's are very slow but they will catch up soon. Just little pips thus far.

Your pink one looks like it's made of cellophane, Annette. Beautiful. I wonder what your yellow one could be.

High Noon (a clear yellow)

The colours are washing out where the flower is lit. I'm going to see if I can correct that.

I love Chojuraku. It hasn't wanted to open all the way and prefers looking like a massive rose bud. I'd like to fix the colour on it, too. The bloom is more blue than my photos suggest, especially when it was beginning to open. When the sun was going down, the flower looked ghostly. I hope you all don't mind several photos of the same flowers.

The noid tree peonies today.

Two of the plants are labelled 'yellow' , however, the leaves are different.

'Pink'- all of the buds opened today. You're right Pwinjet, the petals are thin, like a delicate paper.

Wait a minute...are those the unidentified ones you photographed a couple of weeks back? The three? Well done! :hurray:
The yellow ones over here are always High Noon, but there are few sources of tree peonies for the island.

I got most of my trees from garden centres nearby. The two I mail ordered did not/are not doing as well. Let me show the difference.

Hanakisoi mail-order as it is now:
Thumb of 2014-04-30/Pwinget/304c31

Hanakisoi from nearby green grocer:
Thumb of 2014-04-30/Pwinget/f95743

The other mail order tree is almost a fail. It got some fungus and almost died completely, but I cut off the bad bits and it has new, weak growth. I hope it's not the nurse root that's sprouting!
Because of this, I'm not keen on mail ordering trees. Plus, we don't have the options available in the states so usually what I find nearby is the extent I find through mail order. I am lucky that garden centres here almost always carry peonies including trees. I have to island hop to go to another nursery that carries the more exotic kinds, like Ten-I. He's the only nursery I know in Canada that sells it!

Here is picture of a hybrid TP I got from TreePeonyGarden.com last fall. It was a 5 year old plant. It has dainty greenery but beautiful blooms with a heavenly scent. It is a p. suffruticosa x p rockii. Enjoy
