Might not be a good idea to use Alfalfa!! This is and has been grown as a GMO for some time now...to my surprise. It was approved as a roundup ready crop and people like us use it as a fertilizer but others feed their animals with it. The ingredient in roundup has harmful effects on plant and animal life, including diseases, It alters cells and DNA. This stuff is on and in the alfalfa!!

It is difficult to express my disgust with all the "engineering" done by Monsanto.

Many legislators and those invested in such companies only eat organic foods and that should tell something.

I will only ask if anyone, anyone, has experienced any harm from using Alfalfa with their daylilies? Has anyone had their plants show any benefits from using Alfalfa? I have never used it, but not saying I never would.

I use it and I don't think there are any side-effects to my daylilies. (But how would I know????) I use the pellets/cubes for livestock as fertilizer for my daylilies. I know some of the growers do too!

Unfortunately its not just alfalfa... corn and soy have been genetically modified to create their own pesticide, and that's not all.

And we wonder why there are so many children born with birth defects or have disabilities nowadays! And allergies, too! Where I work, I'd say the majority of people have a severe allergy to a particular food product. I don't have any allergies to food (that I know of), but I am told that could change down the road. Hmmmm ... all that they are doing to our food is making us all sick! (I know this comes as no surprise to most! But it sure makes me mad everytime I go food shopping!!!) I work with children with varying disabilities and handicaps. The number of children with autism coming into my school just blows my mind! Check out these percentages. Pretty alarming, IMHO!

Just read yesterday that the caramel coloring in pancake syrup and sodas has been proven to cause cancer in mice. Sounds fun.

I don't know that there is a problem with using roundup or GMO on flowers. But the question is, what if you use those products for years and then decide to plant vegetables in your garden spot? What happens to the water run-off after contact with those products over a period of time? And what are those products doing to insects, birds and other wildlife long term? As far as I know there have been no studies to answer any of those questions. The even bigger question is, suppose down the road there IS a problem, what is the plan to FIX it? There isn't one.

They found an organism in the RU ready GE crops that is associated with 40 different plant diseases and can make animals have miscarriages. Also this new organism can reproduce and causes disease in plants and animals.

''glyphosate (Roundup) promotes soil pathogens and is already implicated with the increase of more than 40 plant diseases..."

Not to mention people disease like cancer.

I have seen benefits from the alfalfa in our garden. Whether it's from the alfalfa directly or the worm castings left behind from the worms eating the alfalfa the plants increase better and have a lot better scapes on plants that previously without the alfalfa (or worms) did not have great branching on them.

I can't say I have seen any harm to the plants but the brand I use only just started selling the GMO alfalfa as of Dec 1, 2013 and I haven't used any after November of 2013.

Well, if the worms like it and they sure do not seem to be suffering any, I think the daylilies will be fine!! Hurray! Thumbs up I tip my hat to you.

I've used alfalfa pellets on my plants before, but not since the Roundup thing.
I feed my worms coffee grounds, horse bedding, etc.

I've had red worm beds in the past and worms will eat most any kind of garbage from the kitchen plus newspapers, weeds, etc.
I'm not keeping worm beds right now since I now have dogs that will also get into them, eat the garbage plus the worms.
The worm count in my soil is good though since I don't use anything but organic here.
Have lots of moles and that is another story. And dogs dig deep holes going after them; makes it difficult to mow.

I was Google-ing the history of pesticides, but couldn't find the articles I was seeking.
Pesticides became more common after WWII and the original use was to exterminate humans.
Then someone got an award for finding small amounts would also kill bugs, but not humans (at least immediately).

So much of history has become sanitized.

Good to know, Susan. I won't be buying any more.
I wouldn't anyway as I tried it on some plants and not others in close proximity
to compare the results. Saw no difference in the plants good or bad.

Not seeing any increase in earthworms here either after using alfalfa. Evidently different
in other climates and soil types, or planting in pots. Daylilies are field grown here.

We had/have oodles of earthworms, even after the moles have their
share, and they are still feeding, . . . and multiplying like rabbits
as they do each year. Grumbling

Congrats, Jean & DH. Wishing you many more returns of this day!

Susan, I use an 'organic alfalfa meal', not the pellets in my garden. I buy it in 50 LB bags. I noticed a tremendous difference in my plants last summer. Plants that had never bloomed before, bloomed for me last year. Growth was vigorous, and flowers were bright and gorgeous. I would also mention that we had a tremendous amount of rain in May and June of last year which spurred growth.
