Ann: Thank you so much for the tip of the Acorn ! I'm glad you were able to identify that bird. I love the sounds of that Carolina Chickadee ... lucky you to have one in your garden and oh my, the Indigo Bunting is such a pretty shade of blue; would love to see those beauties around here!

Cat: Love your bird photo's, the first looks to be a male Downy Woodpecker (the female doesn't have the red spot on top of the head) and I so love the Rose-breasted Grosbeak! Is the last one a Chipping Sparrow? Thanks for the link to the live cam of those Red-tailed Hawks, those babies are so precious! There's a pair of Red-tailed Hawks nesting in a tree right next to the entrance of a local library here and it was causing a lot of problems before the babies fledged the nest. The adults were dive bombing the people going to and from their cars and one lady had a minor head injury when the hawks talons came into contact with her head. There was talk by officials of re-locating the nest but thank goodness they left it alone. People began using umbrellas to protect themselves when they visited the library and the library folks also used large golf type umbrellas to escort people to and from their cars until the danger was past.

Tee: Thanks for the link to the Osprey nest cam! We've had lots of Ospreys here the past couple of years, they nest all over town. I was at one of our Wal-Mart stores last week and noticed a nest in a tree right next to the main road and parking lot with an adult perched on a limb near the nest and day before yesterday I happened to be at another Wal-Mart and there was an adult at the nest atop a pole in the parking lot. Many businesses have erected poles with platforms atop them and the Ospreys build their nests there. I need to take my camera later today and see if I can get some Osprey pic's. I haven't been up to the tennis courts in our neighborhood this year but there was a pair with young in the nest there last year. They built their nest atop a light pole right on one of the courts which really surprised me ... the adults were very agitated to have humans walking back and forth by the nest ... there are many courts so hopefully the one with the nest is not used during the season when the Ospreys are present.

@ Songofjoy, Thanks for the Acorn !! I have been watching that cam since the parents were building the nest. Nice to get to finally peek at the babies!

@plantladylin, That is sure a lot of excitement at the Library Hilarious! funny even though I now it should not be. Those hawks just want to protect their nest. They don't care that people want to read. Reminds me of when I was driving the school bus and some geese had nested near our walk way to the building. Boy wast that like running the gauntlet every time you had to go inside! Your taking your life in your hands if you go near them when those things have nest or babies! Hilarious!

Cat: Oh my, I think I'd much rather have an umbrella protecting me from flying hawks than trying to run from Geese protecting a ground nest! Smiling I remember a local Aquarium shop here in town many years ago that had a resident goose in the yard ... he would chase and try to bite some people while he left others alone. I remember him coming after me once and I never went back there again!

Claudia: So happy you found our forum again and are sharing your bird photo's! I love the Red-bellieds, they are very common here in my area but I never get tired of taking pictures of them. Great catch of that handsome male Red-bellied and Wow, your photo of the Yellow-rumped Warbler is really nice!

Hilarious! Lin, I know. We would sit in our cars in the parking lot for 10 minutes or more every day trying to get up the courage to run past the geese!! It was traumatizing, lol. I would not want to be bit by one of those things!!!

Thank you Lin. I get easily distracted and then forgetful! Hilarious!

We have Pileated Woodpeckers here and am blessed that they are regulars. I just love seeing these guys stop by and feel very blessed to have them!
This female is stopping almost every day right now.

Claudia, those are wonderful pictures of the Pileated Woodpeckers! We have that WP here too and I love their loud calls; I just can't seem to get decent photo's of them. This first picture is from July 2013 and the second is from February 2013:

My husband and I were sitting out on the back porch after dinner this evening and he spotted this hawk across the way on a neighbor's roof perched on the chimney cap so I ran and got my camera. It was fun watching the Mockingbirds and Grackles dive-bombing the hawk, which didn't seem the least bit bothered by it. He finally flew off to a palm tree in another yard and then out of sight.

Great action shots of the hawk getting dive bombed Lin!

Our Red shouldered hawks here are presently being harassed by the crows. I suspect the crows have a nest in the favored area the hawks like to perch. While other birds don't seem to annoy the hawks, the crows do manage to ruffle the hawks feathers & are sometimes successful in annoying the hawks so much that the hawks fly off.

I've never seen the Crows chase the Hawks but Mockingbirds are always chasing the Crows ... Mockers are nesting all over now and very protective of their nest territory. Last year there was a mocker nest low in shrub in my yard. I'm not sure how many eggs were in the nest but none made it ... as hard as the mocker parents tried protecting their nest, crows and snakes were around and I think they got all the eggs. Crying

A golden crowned sparrow and what I think is likely a female Anna's hummingbird - can anyone confirm that ID?

Awwwww, that sparrow is really cute Deb! It can be awfully hard to ID hummers. Maybe someone else can figure out what it is. I do know you have the Anna's in your area.

Deb, what wonderful photo's! It's so much fun for me way down south to see birds from other areas of the country that I've never seen before. The Golden-crowned Sparrow is so pretty and that sure does look like a beautiful lady Anna's Hummingbird. For comparison check out the image here: http://nwbackyardbirder.blogsp...

Thanks, Lin. I know what you mean about new birds - we recently visited your neck of the woods and I took so many pictures of exotic-to-me birds, then had a fun time trying to ID them all. Even your seagulls are different than ours. I bought an app for my Nook from Audubon which is very helpful in deciphering differences between similar birds. It also includes their range by time of year, which can eliminate a lot of look-alikes. The fun part (for me) is the ability to create different folders to record birds you have spotted in different areas. So far, I have my backyard birds and Florida birds, looking forward to future travels.
