Bree, Is pitaya not a dragon fruit? I know there are several different varieties called dragon fruit...I have one that was given to me as an epiphylum, but most of them around here look like epies, only with more thorns and yellow flowers, and heavier growth. Mine will never bloom, as it is in too much shade, but it keeps climbing over the 9 ' wall. We have a large Vietnamese population here and they grow them for the fruit. I personaly don't think it is worth the space....

Carol- yeah it may well be but the dragonfruit i know has the pink fruit with the white inside and the pitaya has the yellow fruit. My plant is only small and has had one flower (that i know of) and one fruit that was perfect. It was a cutting i got sent in the mail.Thumb of 2010-12-02/bree/0f88e2 the flower was white and reallly big, opened one night/early morning and i missed it but saw it closed. Since it fruited that means it was pollinated doesnt it? what with though?
The black bit on the plant is where i pulled the fruit from.
