Keep an eye out at Lowe's for those trellises, Carol. They come in then disappear very quickly. I've been hoping to get another one for a while, and keep missing out.I do love the trellis since I can just lift the whole thing and move 9 orchids all at once, usually to get them out of the rain.

Ursula, yes I do love to swim and look at the orchids, but I'm always seeing stuff I need to fuss with when I'm floating in the pool . . . a gardener's work is never done, right?

Finally the screening repair on our pool cage is done, and I'm ready to move all the orchids back into place. We did make a change in the corner where the dining table sits. The screening was replaced with what is known as 'Florida glass' which is screen with a plastic coating. So that corner outside the door will be protected from the rain now, and I have a nice big 'refuge' for the orchids when the rain gets just too much. It provides more shade in that area, too, so we can eat lunch outside in the spring and fall, as well as the winter. We only did the south and west-facing panels, as I wanted the morning sun to still come through the east side.

I've been experimenting with attaching things to the trellises on the west side, and found that the 6in. wood slat baskets fit nicely between the 'rungs' on the trellis. My nice cork mounts attach easily with plastic coated wire ties, too.

It is freezing around here!! I am having a hard time getting used to the frigid air, luckily temps are supposed to moderate towards the end of the week.

Yes, it's forecast to be 39 tomorrow morning, but Thursday back up to 50ish. I might keep everyone protected for one more night, but warm again by the weekend, thankfully. This is at least a couple of months early for it to be this cold!

If it wasn't for the OC, I would still be out there carrying orchids around the house. The only thing I did was close the windows and set the old man palm (Coccothrinax crinita) inside. It is real small and in a pot so no problem. You should look it up if you don't already know it. It has a long shag of hair that hangs from the bottom of the fronds all the way to the ground, even as a seedling. I think it is rated a zone 11 plant so I will always have to protect it. It is a slow grower so I will have it for many years.

Serious OC envy happening again tonight. But really, Jim you are missing out on lots of fun. I had a frog chirping in my office last night, and two geckos running around. I'm sure they all rode indoors on the orchids. Counting on them to take care of any bugs that also came in to visit.

That reminds me of the chirping crickets I bring inside every Fall! Hilarious! In the early years it drove me crazy, nowadays I simply make sure the bedroom door stays closed! Smiling Eventually you catch them all/they die.

I spent so much time and energy spit shining the OC for the Tampa Orchid Club folks that I just had to take a few pictures.

My greenhouse has just about the correct amount of daylight to turn the leaves on a Poinsettia red again. I have not used any additional light in the greenhouse at all this season!

This was a tiny Poinsettia last Christmas, I didn't have the heart to toss it after the holidays. I repotted it in the Spring and watered it along with my other stuff outside for the Summer.
Not a huge show, but I am happy it is turning red!

I have never tried to grow and re-bloom any of my Poinsettia. I buy them (five this year) and just toss them after the holiday season. I assume they won't take a freeze and if not, I have no room to over-winter them in my greenhouses. Crying I guess I could keep them on the enclosed porch though. I think it would be interesting to see them color up for the holidays next year. Thumbs up

Ken, they need a nice warm spot inside and kept in the dark from ca 5 pm to 8 am / about natural daylight here, until they color up, usually it takes ca. 6 -8 weeks.

I agree they are easy plants and fun to re-bloom if you can. The key is the "kept in the dark" part. I had some planted out front in the garden. They grew and made beautiful new leaves that should have colored up for the holidays, but the car headlights going by on the street at night were enough light to prevent them blooming. They really need it completely dark in order to stimulate the blooms which cause the bracts to color.

In the wilds of Mexico you see them 12ft. tall on the rural roadsides with gorgeous huge red bracts on them in December. Short day length and very dark at night. If your enclosed porch got any light from inside the house you'd need to screen them from it at night, Ken.

This doesn't sound like I will have any luck. I provide supplemental light in the greenhouses and there is no way to keep them from getting some light on the porch, either from the inside of the house or the outside (yard) lights. Oh well. Now I know why I never bothered. Sticking tongue out
