Thanks for the name, Gale. That usually isn't one of my favorite colors either, but there is something about that bloom that is incredible! I think the color looks good on it!

Beautiful blooms, Cindy! I love Milky Way Eyes! Hadn't seen that one before, and it's now on my "must have" list!

Black Briar Bay, FFO. It isn't a perfect bloom, but it's very new to the garden. Can't believe it is blooming already!

I've always been a big fan of Wild Horses. Planted one in my daughter's garden, and it never really got going, never bloomed in 3 years. We left it behind when she moved.

Today I see those beautiful blooms from both Natalie and Mike - hey, is it a wimpy plant or was it just that we didn't treat it well enough?

I am sure as heck getting myself some alfalfa pellets!

Elaine, Wild Horses is a tough one to figure out. I originally had it planted at my house in Utah, where it didn't do well at all. But, I just couldn't give it up, even though it almost never bloomed, and never multiplied. I moved it to Idaho last year, and it went from the original two fans that I bought 5 years ago, to 10 fans or more over winter, and I've got 3 or 4 scapes, with lots of buds. It is so much happier here, and I am thrilled that it is blooming! The bloom is so much larger here, and the scapes are much taller. I can't tell you how excited I am! It's one that I'll never get rid of, because I feel that it is worth the wait, if it decides to take a year (or three) off from blooming. I'm just hoping that it has found a place where it is happy, and will continue to do good.

Ahh, thanks, Natalie. I will maybe try again with it. I plan to visit in the fall, and order some daylilies to plant then at my daughter's place. Maybe we will 'invest' in Wild Horses again. Even though it's an older variety, the plants are still pretty pricey, so I thought it must have at least some merit. Then I thought 'Or maybe it just doesn't multiply easily, and that's why they charge so much for it . . . '. Rolling my eyes.

Who knows, maybe the alfalfa pellets will make the difference for it to be happy and get established there. My new daylilies here in FL will be getting a serving or two, as well.

I need to try the alfalfa pellets. Is this the horse products you buy at the Feed stores? I have a Rural King and a Southern States within 25 miles.

Welcome to the newcomers!!

Elaine, doesn't your daughter live in Salt Lake City? If she does, I wouldn't buy Wild Horses for there. I lived in Holladay, and the plant was very unhappy there! I think it is too cold there for it to be truly happy, and do what it is supposed to do, which is to bloom! I didn't pay more than $5 for mine for a double fan.

Teresa, it is the horse alfalfa pellets that you want to get. The ones for rabbits have salt or something in them. They actually sell them at Walmart in the city here. I haven't bought it there, since I like to support our small feed store in town. I think I paid $13 for a 50 pound bag there, which was the most I've paid, but I want them to stay in business.

Ok, I should be over there soon. Is now a bad time to use them? Maybe after their done blooming?

You can add them at any time. I like to put them an inch or so away from the fan, and I sprinkle a couple of handfuls around each plant. I never bother with working them into the soil. They break down when the plants get watered, or when it rains. You can also add them on top of mulch. Takes longer for them to get down to the soil that way, but it's better than nothing. They don't break down instantly, so it's kind of like them getting a time-released fertilizer. I asked Michele about using too much before, and she said she doesn't think you can use too much. That was my biggest worry, and I've never seen anything bad happen to the plants, so I am no longer worried about overdoing it.

Well, y'all are making me nervous about Wild Horses. It was new here this year and seem to do quite well and currently all the six scapes have pods if they don't fall off. The daylilies seem pretty good at producing balloon pods Smiling . Normally I would expect it to do better after the first year, but now I'm not sure.

Right, thanks again Natalie. Maybe I will buy it for myself here in Florida, then if I can grow it here, I'll divide it when it's big enough and 'gamble' a few fans at my daughter's place. Where'd you get it for $5? The only site I found it on this spring, Oakes, had it for $39.95!

Yes, she is in Salt Lake. Her garden is on the south side of her house, very protected and exposed to western sun in winter, so I'm thinking it will be pretty warm there. We shall see! We lived in Salt Lake for 21 years before moving here, and my south side garden was at least a zone warmer in winter than the north side of the house.

I planted starts of Moonlit Masquerade, Siloam Double Classic and Creative Edge for her this spring. Creative Edge had two scapes coming along when I left this week. Hope to get there to mulch them well and top-dress with the alfalfa in the fall before it gets too cold.

Wow! The beautiful blooms just keep coming from y'all! Some amazing cultivars!!!

I, too, love the YANKEE PINSTRIPES daylily blooms. Very unique look from the norm.

Dick - Spotted Fever is another really interesting looking bloom!

One of my seedlings has a similar look to it. I think Stippled Statement is one of the parents of this seedling. It had a decent bud count, too. So I am really happy with this particular seedling. Might be one that I name and register down the road. (I want to name a few after some loved ones.) It's not rust fungus resistant though ..... oh well, can't have everything.

Two sellers have listed Wild Horses on the Lily Auction for pretty cheap! Type in "Wild Horses" in the search box and you will find them:

Dick, that is a cool bloom! I was thinking more along the lines of white flower with black polka dots. Hilarious! Hilarious! Hilarious!

Elaine, I don't know where your daughter lives, but on 3300 S. and about 3300 East, there is a Smith's Marketplace. That is where I got Wild Horses for $5 for 2 fans. I also got some others that did fantastic. Seems like they came from a grower in Layton, but I'm not positive about that. They have really good sales at Smith's, and they get the majority of their plants from a grower in Orem. I've been to that nursery, and it's great, but you can get better sales at Smith's. You can also ask them to get specific plants and they'll do that. Have her talk to Brian, who is the plant manager.

Donald, I wouldn't worry about your Wild Horses. It looks fantastic! I moved from zone 5a to 7a, and that made all the difference. You are just a tiny bit warmer than I am, so it should do really good for you.
