Thanks guys! My aunt gave me an old patterned chenille bedspread to cut up, curious to see what happens with that. Thanks to this site I now know about succulents, and just ordered a bunch this weekend.

Can you tell me what this is, comes up every year, but it's only my second spring here and still not sure what plants are that I didn't put in. Could it be a succulent?

Looks like it could be Autumn Joy sedum. That is what mine looks like when it firsts peeks out for spring.

I looked it up and I think you are correct Audrey. It's in a garden area that we didn't get to last year. I may move it as we totally missed the flowers last fall. Thanks.

Now I need an honest opinion about my purple...
Thumb of 2015-04-07/Nancilsue/a587d6
Funny thing, looks more blue and black here, which I love, may try one like that. (I did mix black paint with the purple to get a dark purple on the bottom...)
It's definitely purple in real life. Confused

I can see the purple, but the camera light does cause glare that makes it look more black.
Your Autumn Joy should look wonderful in one of your new containers.

Lynn, if I put in the planter would I just move it inside for the winter or would it survive in the planter?

What is your growing zone Nancy? If you are talking about Hylotelephium spectabile 'Herbstfreude' ('Autumn Joy') it is hardy down to zone 3.

So are you talking about the container surviving, or the sedum?

Cool planters, but I've got a lot of back-reading to do.

Haven't seen it (yet) but not that it's not here....those hand hold plastic coffee cans with drain holes drilled? I'm using Folgers brand for temporary pots right now. Drilled holes and went with it. Easy to handle/carry and sturdier than many similar sized nursery pots. I can't speak to the grade of plastic and UV rays but the cloth and concrete should offer some protection while offering an easy grip with support hand grip underneath?

Lynn, I was worried about the plant being taken out of the ground. Would it affect the normal dormancy etc...

Not this early in the season. Just have your container ready to place the entire root ball into it. Get all of the root ball if you can with lots of attached dirt. I've done this before.

I'm not sad, though, as we've been enjoying this cooler and wetter than average summer by getting out and about more than we usually do. We've been "studying" plants, animals and ecosystems in natural areas, state parks and wildlife reserves at every opportunity. Eight is such a fun age!
We just returned from a two day stay at a state park on the southern edge of Indiana, and my son has a camping trip with grandparents set for the rest of the week. Perhaps I'll get a bit more done with the planters during that time, but it'll be a wonder if I do. I'm in a full-fledged hiking junkie state of mind right now, and I'll likely be joining them every chance I get! Hilarious!

Ckat,
I love this Thumbs up Is that 2 different planters, one sitting inside of the other?

Your planters look so wonderful! Nice job!

Hope your recovery period is brief. Group hug

Wanting to try some of these pots. Didn't find out if these are winter hardy. Anyone know? We get to 0 degrees sometimes in Tennessee.
Have made hypertufa pots. First ones 4 yrs. ago and they are still good.

Yes, it's two. I like them like that, so if I ever get around to finishing them I may just leave them that way.

valleylynn said:Maybe @chelle can tell us how hers has come through winter.

I can't answer this yet. Mine did end up in the same condition after winter as before it, but they were still empty ...and they were under a bit of roof. They did have snow and wet and freeze and thaw, but since they weren't finished or planted I just don't know. If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say they'd be just fine.

Thanks for calling me back to the thread, Lynn. I'd wandered off! Whistling

Thank you Chelle, that sure sounds like they might make it through a zone 7 winter.

I should have added my concrete pots I made back in the 90's. Still look good, have green moss growing around the bottom. I still like the durability of real concrete but not the weight.
