I've also got a leaf that is showing the same ugly sunburn, when all along I was thinking that it was getting 'just enough'... Blinking Rolling my eyes.

Yup, it's a balancing act for sure here. I move mine into a little more sun in the winter, October-ish through March but then start sheltering them from our strong rays again. We have very clean air here, too - no industry to make air pollution, although we do have lots of cars. We also have flat terrain and regular winds to clear the pollution out to sea, thankfully.

I take down my Aluminet on the west-facing wall of the cage for the winter, but have to put it on the calendar to go back up before things get too toasty.

Elaine, I love the color on your Choc. Drop. I have several of these plants but am still waiting for that first bloom.

Love the soft color of Lc. Love Knot!

Yep, direct sun here in Florida is very intense and will fry a lot of plants, especially orchids ... ask me how I know. Rolling on the floor laughing Mine are all now located on the east side of the house where they get bright early morning sun.

Oooh, the Chocolate Drop is really pretty, nice dark color.

Nice soft color on Love Knot, Ursula. I also like the Chocolate Drop. One note on sunburn. The black burn spot has a tendency to develop a yellow circle around it. This is a fungal infection and must be monitored closely. It's best to get rid of the leaf if it starts to spread quickly.

One new bloomer for me today. Bepi. Sylvia White (B. nodosa x Epi. ciliare) is beginning to open. This is the first of four spikes on the plant.

Elaine, the color of Chocolate Drop 'Kodama' doesn't fade, the blooms stay glossy to the day they drop. And the scent is truly beautiful too!

Regarding sunburn - yes of course, my more Northern Latitude allows for more sunshine than many of you here in Southern regions. And - I go from a very sunny greenhouse ( glass roof ) straight into the cage in the Spring, where I group my Orchids according to their light requirements. The Lc Love Knot was used to the fairly high light condition, so I didn't have to worry about sunburn.

Jim, your Bepi. Sylvia White is a beauty, those blooms look like Egrets.

A noid (bought the other day at a library sale) is flowering. Is it just a white Dendrobium nobile or something?

Glen, you can just call it a nobile type Dendrobium or a soft cane Dendrobium. It likes lots of sun and it will get to be a large plant. It's pretty! Enjoy.

Gct. Renate has opened a third spike, right alongside Cattlianthe Chocolate Drop 'Kodama'. Good excuse for another picture, although I couldn't seem to get them both to focus at the same time.

Thanks, Ursula, I will try to refrain from any more repeat photos but it sure has delighted me with a nice series of blooms. Amazingly long-lasting considering our hot weather.

I finally moved the big Brug out of the way so I could stick my nose near the Chocolate Drop - my gosh it smells like lilacs, I think!

Elaine, I think the nice part about long lasting Orchid blooms is exactly that: We get to enjoy them more!! Lovey dubby Every time we walk past our favorites and get to smell them, we smile, right?

Talking about name changes, some are not delighted at all. This forum has a lot of professional Orchid hybridizers/growers.

Jim: Nice Bepi!

Glenn: Very pretty Dend. noid you have there.

Elaine: Your Renate is so pretty and I really like Luke Skywalker.

I sent my Gct. Renate to drdawg/Ken, I know he will be a much better caretaker than I ever was ... and he can divide it when it's big enough, which I'd have no idea how that's done! LOL, I keep saying I need to downsize because of my short attention span and the lack of care I give so many plants and what did I do? I ended up purchasing two orchids from his website along with some potting media and a pine slab mount which I used this morning to mount my little staghorn fern. Maybe I should downsize from so many different types of plants and just concentrate on one or two genera. Green Grin! I had a very large greenhouse many years ago and wish I had one again but *sigh* our HOA won't allow such a thing, even a small one. Sad

That was so nice of you, Lin. I'm sure Ken will still post pictures so you can enjoy it when it blooms, and of course you can always enjoy mine vicariously as well. ( Btw, 'just a few different plants' is no fun at all for collectors like you and me. )

Ursula, it pleases me to see that others - and knowledgeable others to boot! - think the same as I do about name changes. Scientists changing something just because they can, not thinking about whether they really need to, or should!

Here's a good example, I can't for the life of me remember what Gct. stands for, and have to scroll back to Jim's post to find out. Old folks like me will never remember the 'new' names or they will resist them like Jim does with Schlomburgkia/Myrmecophila (which has even been around long enough for me to remember).

People with books - even fairly recent books! - will read about orchids with the old names and need a translation guide. I think it will take at least a couple of generations for the 'new' names to be accepted and widely used, especially with the growers and hybridizers resisting the changes and leaving 'old' name labels on their plants. Meantime it will just be a little Grumbling teensy Grumbling ongoing Grumbling irritation Grumbling for casual hobbyists like me.
