It's odd how we feel about our names. I hate it when people call me Mary. Mary is not my name -- Mary Ann is my name -- two words, one name. Drives me nuts to be call half of my name. Sticking tongue out

Just don't call me late for dinner ... I think that was the saying!

Yes Bonnie -- you being a southerner, would have to think that dinner is the mid-day meal. It isn't. That's lunch. What you call supper, northerners call dinner. I learned that in a most embarassing way -- when we first moved to Kentucky, we were invited to *dinner* at a neighbor's house. We arrived around 5:00. They were in the process of putting everything away -- and scrambled to fix something for us to eat. They had invited us for the mid-day meal -- we thought they meant the evening meal. Sad *Blush*

In the old days up Nort! we had breakfast, dinner, and supper. Dinner was meant to be the biggest meal of the day, and on the farm that was at noon. supper was a lighter meal. Now days the biggest meal of the day is usually at the end of the day, as everyone is working now, so lunch is a quick meal and the big meal is at the end of the day. It was probably healthier to have the big meal at noon, when you still were active for the afternoon, not eating a big meal and then sitting around afterwords. Smiling

Really Tom? Well -- maybe it's a Midwestern thing then -- meals are breakfast, lunch and dinner. Supper can be used interchangeably with dinner.

I agree with you about the timing on the biggest meal of the day -- much healthier to eat the big meal mid-day, and a lighter meal before resting and retiring for the night.

down south dinner is interchangeable with lunch. it is lunch if you eat a sandwich as in a lunch box, or at a snack bar, but if it is a cooked balanced meal it is dinner. Supper is always at the end of the day with family.

I retired from a organization that hired people from all over the U.S.A. Once, noticing how we all had different ways of saying the same thing, we took a poll on Coca Cola. People from certain regions called all soft drinks coke. Some from another region called it pop while others called it soda or soda pop. It was interesting.
