Midwesterners use pop. And everyone else finds it funny. I speak from experience - I grew up in pop country then moved to Washington state and then to the south, and boy do they all laugh when you ask what kind of pop they have. Hilarious!

As for dinner being the larger meal of the day. That is extremely common in Europe where they take much longer lunch breaks (including shutting down for siestas), and I believe many of the Germanic people who settled a large part of the northern Midwest brought that custom over with them. It is healthier to eat more earlier in the day, but with everyone working it is not possible to cook up a big dinner. Also, because of the longer dinner period in Eurpoe, they work later so a lighter meal for supper at mid evening makes sense.

I grew up in central Massachusetts. I am 2nd and 3rd generation Greek and Swedish. Both of my parents were bilingual. We ate real food. Rye bread, not white. Stinky cheese, not American. Lunch was always called "dinner". I say, "Soda Pop."

It's pop in Northern Wisconsin, but Soda toward Milwaukee.

Linnea, I was born in Massachusetts, also. Did you ever drink Moxie?
My mother wouldn't let me drink Coke. Too much sugar!

Down here, Coke is often a generic term for carbonated drinks. Unless you happen to be partial to Dr. Pepper. Then, you'd BETTER call it Dr. Pepper or DP. Hilarious!

Dr. Pepper -- anyone ever heated it up and had it as a hot beverage?

Did when we first moved to Texas in 1971 and found out there was such a thing as Dr. Pepper. But I never liked it hot. Don't care much for DP at all, though, so that's probably why. Hilarious!

Not me. I grew up just north of Milwaukee & it was soda. Dinner was at noon on Sunday, otherwise in the evening. War was on & so was rationing.

By the way, planted iris seeds today in their flats --3 flats & 4 pots for smaller groups. Only one cross took, so the rest are bee pods. one of those was on a red amoena SDB seedling of mine. thank you bees, 44 seeds in that one.

My Swedish great grandmother, who came from from near the Arctic Circle, loved Moxie. I do too, but I didn't drink it as a child and now I avoid GMO corn syrup. As a child, my favorite was Club Soda. My parents built a golf course. We had Club Soda in the pro shop for making Ice Cream Sodas. I ordered it any time I wanted, all summer long. Smiling

My grandparents owned a rifle range and an organic (for the 1960's) pear orchard (in southern California). I used to work the 'office' checking in the shooters and selling snacks and ammo. I got to have a 'soda pop' once or twice a month. Here in central California it seems to be more common to call it 'soda'.

I just saw his photo of Seasons In The Sun. WOW! The iris is the only flower that has such a range of color and color blends. Not to mention forms and classes. I am trying very hard not to add any TB's to my wish list. It is already over a dozen to be ordered. Now my lists of SDB's in another thing altogether.... oh, my!
