The all knowing/seeing weather boobs and boobettes on TV said the storm that went through last night was not going to hit here (as did the long range radar weather forecast on the net) but it did.

One half of the Corn , although only six inches high is laying flat, ditto for the onions and of course I finally put down weed killer last night to get rid of sedge, spurge and chickweed weed was probably washed-out/away.

Rain was supposed to come tonight or tomorrow but we had over 2 inches of occsdional showers. Rolling on the floor laughing Blinking Grumbling

Just now the classical music channel voice said , Rain tonight will hard and heavy so I am not going out to the garden and fix what could.
I was worried about the South Garden which was in tough shape due to lack of rain but it seems they will get rain also. (so the purslane will be thick as scum on a swamp.

I was wrong, fifty miles South of here when the South garden is they got zero rain, so tomorrow when I head home sprinkler time.

An odd thing, we got near 3 inches of rain but a 4 gallon pail sitting on the lawn was full to the brim.
Bad thing, the filter on the water barrel is gone, either fell in or blew off to Oz. Angry

We had a pretty good thunderstorm sweep through around 4:30 (eastern), lots of wind and a little hail included. Beautiful day up until then... and by then I was done working outside anyway. Spent several hours cleaning up weeds in a shady corner, had to pull out quite a few big ferns (ostrich ferns?) that were taking over; quite a few years ago I transplanted some from the woods into that corner and they have kind of taken advantage of the hospitality - but I still like them. Smiling I have foxglove in there that self sows and is getting ready to flower, bleeding hearts, brunnera, a pot with "Skaugum" begonias, and a few hosta remnants - I dug most of them out last year, the deer had discovered them and they were gnawed right down to the ground (plus, the slugs have always made a mess of them). I thought they were pretty much all gone, but discovered a little one that I actually was wishing I had saved some of - some old variety with green and white, "twisty" leaves that I found growing at a cabin where I lived years ago, and brought to this house when we moved here. Smiling

Got home and found the wonderfully accurate weather radar was a pile of bollocks; not one single drop of rain had fallen, so pulled out the garden hose and sprinkled the garden for 70 minutes the roses for 45 minutes and a part of the lawn for 30 minutes.

Backed the car into the garage so when I go back I can start putting in a new radiator and associated parts.
Garden is covered in purslane and I am debating whether to pull it or let it be; last year I did not pull till after it went to seed which is why the garden is covered in it this year.

Beautiful day sitting in the shade with a brisk wind blowing; Sharon had the idea to grill some sweet corn when we got back up North.
First time I actually did that as I prefer boiling but she followed some recipe for fancy butter she ripped out of a magazine and even though the old, and I mean ooooold, lava rock grill is on its last legs, it worked out pretty well.
Only one company in the world still makes lava rock grills but it is in Italy for approx. $150 BUT shipping is almost another $150 , so, so far no go but as the glorified gas ranges all those for sale in the U.S. are darn hear as expensive, just maybe....

What is there to debate about whether to pull the purslane or not? Even when it doesn't go to seed that stuff spreads like crazy in my garden - I've got it pretty well under control now, wish I could say the same for the horsetail weeds Sticking tongue out

We're going to have a rainy season this year. One day sunny & hot, followed by 3 days of wild wind & rain. We had a tornado warning the other day, but it didn't happen thank goodness. A lot of plants are turning yellow because there's just too much water. Rain barrel's full, but I'm not using it, that's for sure.

I wish I had that problem, first time in a quite a bit that drought was a genuine problem in my south garden; corn that should be shoulder height is waist high and tasseling. Grumbling

Definitely not too much rain here, either. It seems that there is either way, way too much rain in some areas, and way too little in others. Nothing to be done except find a way to deal with what we get! Sad

RpR - now we're wanting rain. The ground is cracking, and although I can still use the rain barrel, it's evaporating quickly. We came close (again) to having a tornado the other night. It got so dark so quickly that I feared for one here. I didn't have my cell phone on or it would have been screaming a warning, I'm sure.

Technically, for the season we are above average for rain, but reality shows how useless those numbers are.
I am more worried about next year, the sloughs are all extremely low to dry which shows more about moisture level in the soil than any thing else. Group hug

The fishing pond nearby has low water levels. It means that the banks are steeper, and us old folks find it harder to find a level spot to stand or put a lawnchair. Too small a pond for a dock. It's a stocked pond. I'm looking forward to next Wed - going 2 night's camping with my friend Dianne. Maybe we'll pop over to the pond & do some fishing. One's 10 min to the North of me, and the other's 15 min to the South, so really not far apart.

I was looking at the long range weather forecast and, if they are any where near accurate the will no sub-zero weather in min-Minnesota (sixty miles North in Brainerd probably quite different) but there will also so no January thaw. Hurray!
(never did like those) with no sudden drop in temps in Feb. or March. but a steady warm up each week or so.

IF, if that is any where close to accurate, may get the garden in in early May. I tip my hat to you.

I would like the January thaw if it didn't seem to usually involve rain that comes just short of actually melting whatever snow is on our driveway and then rapidly dropping temperatures that turn said driveway (and a lot of parking lots) into a skating rink. Sticking tongue out
(our driveway is gravel so we leave a packed layer of snow to run the snowblower over.)

LOL - maybe because it's actually nighttime?

37° here , positively balmy!! I'm planning to finish up with a couple of outdoor chores tomorrow, then we're going to go out for a Friday fish fry and watch the Christmas parade. So nice to have December 1st with essentially no snow on the ground!! Big Grin

This was the garden on December 1st, 2019

-2F here. Going to 25F on Sunday, so that's a plus. It's when our seniors have their Silver Willow Senior Citizen's Christmas dinner, so it's nice that the weather will be good for them.

It is 27 F at Three O'Clock P.M.; supposed to hit high thirties the next three days.

Gave the boy a bath and with Sharon's new kitchen faucet with a pull-out nozzle a good deal easier, but then they also seemed to know they needed a bath as there was no moanful whining and little resistance.
Four days of Christmas left after today, but I played CD Christmas Music yesterday for the first time this year.
