'Canyon Snow' is a good one. I had it at my last house. As for keeping them in containers, I've abused, I mean, nurtured them in pots for years before I figured out where to plant them.

Rob, I looked at the link. Got an annual electronic membership and ordered the following seeds. Big Grin Many of the line items list the area in which the plants have been grown. I see Watsonville and Cupertino and Moorpark. (See Sherry's Canyon Snow, too.) I am going to tempt my luck and am mostly going for the Ghios. Says they are all open pollinated and listed by the pod parent. Meaning we won't know what we get until/unless it blooms, right? Adventure! Doesn't say seed quantities, but, iffen you want a few seeds to try without looking at any other pictures to tempt you down that other road, speak up rat-cheer. Big Grin

I think PCN's have just amazing colors, but I know that the humid south is not going to be the place for them. Sighing! I will have to be content with all the other varieties of iris that do grow here. Oh, poor me. Only thousands of bearded, JA's, Species X, LA's, cristata, techtorum, sanguania, dutch and spurias left to peruse.... Hilarious! Hilarious!

Beautiful selection Debra! So do you buy the seeds based on the pod parents? That sounds like fun! nodding

Yes, looks to me like the seed exchange is all open pollinated varieties and they are all listed by pod parent. But Carl said most germinated Pacific Coast seeds turn out pretty flowers (which cannot be always said for Beardeds, or Daylilies, for that matter!). Worth a try to see if I can grow at least a few. Only spent as much on all the seeds--including shipping--as I would have on a single rhizome NOT including shipping.

I'm anxious to see how you make out, Deb ! I'm also curious about the time frame, from seed-to-bloom. There's no way they would survive "my" winter, but,....maybe as a "pot plant", or grown as a 'long season annual Shrug!

Here's a link to an article on growing PCN's from seed. The Kings Iris society is inland, not on the coast so the guidelines should be applicable many places.

http://www.kcis.org/kcisdwnld/...

I know a number of different hybridizers who use nylon stockings and twist ties to soak their seed. One batch of seed and tie it off then the next batch, etc. And putting them in the toilet tank means that you change the water every time you flush and you don't waste water. Just be sure it doesn't jam the toilet works.

I agree , What's the "time frame", from when the seed sprouts, to actual bloom ?

On The Society for Pacific Coast Native Iris site it says "In large pots, PCI seedlings will flower in the second year unless nutrient levels are too low."
