Looks nice Julia. How is everyone doing? I hope well. I have been so busy trying to get things together at my mothers house that I only stop in for a few minuets a day, hopefully things will calm down after we finish building a ramp.

Busy here too. I will try to get pictures of more heuchera in a few days. DS is here from Illinois, leaves Sunday morning. Some of mine are looking good. I also want to collect seed.

Kira Black Forest in it's 2nd or 3rd year.

Thumb of 2015-08-06/springcolor/5cdde5 Carnival Candy Apple. Not sure I like the way this one grows. Kind of floppy. Shall see next year.

Thumb of 2015-08-06/springcolor/4f50cdHeuchera Paris in dappled shade. Thought this one was a goner.

Thumb of 2015-08-06/springcolor/e9abec another mixed container with a noid heuchera.

Beautiful Julia. I like the way they go with the painted ferns too. I have planted so many different ones in the garden next to that fern. But as I have said over and over Herc do not live long in my gardens. I put 12 of them in pots last year and they did very good.

I have to order a painted fern. It is a slow growing fern for me so I do not want to remove it from the garden. It is finally growing into a nice plant.

This is it with stainless steel. SS has been the longest living in the garden so far.

That's a nice combination. What kind of soil do you have? I wonder if you added some course sand or pea gravel and an extra big planting hole. Maybe drainage? I think I have a drainage issue. Soon as it cools of a bit I'm going to amend my heuchera bed with course sand. I also think that I push the sun exposure too much.

Mine have had problems with sun scorched foliage for the last two years because the dogwood tree that I planted them under is not as full and dense as it was due to the drought and is not providing as much shade as it has in non-drought years.

Although I have excellent drainage, I did add quite a bit of decomposed granite to my back fill which only consists of native soil because I wanted to mound the plants up a bit and didn't want to use compost in the back fill.

Looks like I am not going to have to worry about sun scorch for a while because the smoke from the fires on the other side of the mountain has reduced the impact of the sun on all of my plants. I doubt if they will get the fires out for several weeks.

@springcolor, Julia ... when you write about amending your heuchera bed are you planning to do that this fall or wait until next spring ? I can't purchase heucheras up here, but have noticed that several online nurseries have them on sale. I was wondering if it would be wise to purchase the sale plants and plant them next month. Also, it's time to divide my 'Amethyst Myst'. From what I've read planting and dividing should be done in spring, but this is such an odd year weather wise could I do this in fall ?

I'm going to amend this fall right after Labor Day. Our first frost is not until late October to early November. I may be sorry but the plants on my hillside didn't do well last winter, lost so many. Soil is good for 6 inches then heavy soil. I new that but, was hopping the hill would be enough to move the water. The hillside is also faced with a rockery which would add to free flowing water one would think. Oh well live and learn.

This has been an interesting summer for us, unusually hot and dry. Nothing like you Lyn, but many days in the 90's. Early Spring is better to divide and move, after last frost date. Early spring is just too busy for me.

Thank you so much for the confirmation. I was just going to do it for exactly the same reason ... spring is too busy. I do wish I had some back up plants, so if my plants make it through the winter I may try to propagate a few.

My first frost date is also late October to early November.

I think I will see if I can take advantage of some of the sales. During the regular season, the plants are just too expensive because I am not certain they will do well up here.

I wanted to plant some up on my slope, too, but I am still working on the house pad level. My slope does have good drainage, but the area where I'd like to plant them always gets covered in a lot pine needles and I don't get up there soon enough in spring to clear the area. I have lousy rocky soil up there that drains quite well. ... Smiling

Julia the soil where they live the longest is in a bed that was a gravel bed that eventually became soil covered because of leaf mold breakdown. I did not realize it was once a gravel patio area until I started digging to plant my Hostas. So they are growing in pure compost over gravel.

I think I have bad results because we have flooding Fall rain until it freezes and go right into winter snow and ice. They are not strong enough to survive the block of ice two month. Then we have constant freeze and thaw the rest of the winter. Going from 60 to -10 in a day. I just do not have good Herc growing weather.

I have always found ice and wind to be the biggest killers.Winters with good snow cover have good survival rates, but one like 2 years ago where we started with many ice storms and no real snow cover for the coldest months lead to many loses. Last year which was colder but had early snow cover loses were only a couple of plants.

Yes ice and extreme cold spell death. It is why when the colder zones with lots of snow cover can grow Hercs better than my climate. It can be sweater weather in the morning and raining and the temps will drop all day and night and by the next morning your plants are under 3" of water that will just freeze.

I have had great results planting them in coir wire pots and when I set them in the garden they look like they are planted. In December I put them in the corner of the garage and pile leaves around the pots. That way they get some of the blowing rain to keep them moist but not enough to create a ice block around the roots.

Last year I even planted some on the patio in styofoam coolers those really did good.
