OMG... Majorly excited and majorly disappointed today by the same plant. It's a seedling plant from seed I had purchased from Chi-Lung Ko in Taiwan last fall. It's not exactly a pretty plant, just a small caudex and one tall stem. But that stem is developing buds.

I've been watching the largest bud since I first realized it was a bud. But the past few days, as it was getting closer and closer to opening, I realized it was getting really fat. I began to realize it might turn out to be a double flower. So I took these pics for comparison (same bud):

I had moved it to get a better photo, so I put it back where it belonged. I didn't set it down hard, but when the pot hit the table, the bud fell off!

I now wished I had taken a scalpel and more carefully dismembered the bud, but I didn't think of it at the time. I was anxious to know what was inside, so I just ripped it open with my hands. Yes, it was a double!

This was rather a surprise, as the supposed parent plant was single. Here is a link to a photo of the parent: http://www.adenium.com.tw/KO_e...

Here are the dismembered petals:

Thumb of 2015-07-13/rattlebox/504e16 Thumb of 2015-07-13/rattlebox/5bc078

In the first photo, the outer ring of five petals has been separated, while the five-petal inner core is still together. In the second photo, I made a side-by-side comparison of one of the outer petals and one of the inner ones. I found it interesting that the yellow throat of the outer ring of petals is suffused with red, while that of the inner petals is clear pale yellow.

At least this wasn't the only bud, there are several more developing. It's just going to be really hard to have to wait. This is my first double, and it looks like it will turn out to be a really nice black and red one! I'm really excited about that.

It is also reassuring to realize that the seeds Chi-Lung Ko sells appear to be what he claims them to be.

Thanks, everyone!

I moved this Adenium from my nursery area to the back patio. It'll get a bit more sun and have better air circulation. This is where my mature Adeniums are. I don't dare move it again! At least not until it blooms. Green Grin! Green Grin! Green Grin!

I remember on one of the threads someone mentioning something about double buds being more likely to drop than single. Anyone else had this issue? Any secrets to success?

Ron, how exciting. It is going to be a very special bloom from the looks of the petals. Not nice when they drop. Not sure about them dropping off easily, but I will keep it in mind when moving. All I know is that the double and triple flower buds seem to take for ever to open. Especially nice when they do, that they are nice.

Thank you Cindi, second rebloom this summer and the red is getting ready to bloom.

This makes up for losing the seeds of my adenium. I was working long hours and forgot all about it. It had ties but he heavy rains must have cut the ties lose and I lost the seeds. I was able to salvage very little left over.

Gigi, thank you, and thank you for asking for updates. Group hug We had a tropical storm come through here July 4 and though my plants were sheltered, the change in conditions made their buds drop so no new blooms. However, finally they are recuperating and I saw buds on several plants. So hopefully they will open their blooms soon and hopefully no more storms.

This is a study in Anticpation and Frustration.

Remember these? Pics posted earlier in this thread.

Thumb of 2015-08-15/rattlebox/5fece1 Thumb of 2015-08-15/rattlebox/7fa744

The bud looked great on July 11th, fell off on July 12th. I dissected to see color and verify it was, in fact, a double flower. This was from seed ordered from KO Adenium in Taiwan, the parent being a single Red/Black, so getting a double was a huge surprise. Not to mention this is my first double Adenium.

Obviously, I was eagerly anticipating the second bud developing.

Here is the second bud on July 26th: Sad Sad Sad
Thumb of 2015-08-15/rattlebox/654ffe

Oh, the frustration.

So, for bud #3, I moved the plant up to the house where my mature Adeniums live. It would get a bit more sun, and maybe more fresh air to help dry the buds/leaves after a rain, in case that was the problem.

Here is bud 3 on July 29th:

Thumb of 2015-08-15/rattlebox/566609

A bird or something had bitten off the outer half of the bud.

The bud died. Angry Angry Angry

So, now I am waiting for buds 4 & 5, photographed two days ago. Looking good so far, starting to open. These are HUGE buds:

Thumb of 2015-08-15/rattlebox/8088fa Thumb of 2015-08-15/rattlebox/b2b186

I worked a 12-hour day yesterday, so was anxious to get home and see. Really starting to unfurl, but a long way yet to go. Maybe today.

Of course, I'll be out of town all day today. Since the rain yesterday afternoon was causing the buds to sag a bit, I will move the plant under cover before I leave. It won't get any direct sun, but I don't want these double blooms to fill with water.

I'll post pics if/when they finally open!
