Sowed a slew of wildflower seed and some are coming up. Any idea what this one is?

Reminds me of a Lily of some sort. First thing I thought of was Easter Lily as I spotted mine popping up today. Lily (Lilium longiflorum)

It reminds me of Alstroemeria...just not exactly the kind in my yard.

When were the seeds planted? It would take a couple of years to get that stage from most lilium seed. L. longiflorum-- maybe a little faster.

Debra, I wonder if perhaps you had bulb(s)/tuber(s) of some sort (already in that area where you sowed the seeds) that maybe you forgot about?

I looked through all five pages of Alstromeria in the ATP database but couldn't find anything that resembled your plant. I'm not very good at identifying plants by comparing photos; what looks right to my eyes is sometimes waaay off, but I still like the challenge.

I'm going to be out of town tomorrow but if I remember before I leave here I will go out and take a picture of my L. longifolium that are coming up. These are older photos from January 2013

Lin, no, these are definitely from the seed mix I threw out in November, then again in December. That foliage sure looks similar, though.

So it can't be a lilium if it is from this planting of seed. They have to build a bulb before they put up a stem like that. Now I'm curious to see what it turns out to be!

Was it a Texas wildflower mix? Could it be Helianthus Maximiliani maybe? That one has that sort of layout in its growth pattern. I googled images for 'Helianthus Maximiliani foliage' and there are a few photos where you can see the foliage growth. If you don't use 'foliage' you pretty much only get photos of the flower. Just a guess. Where's @Horntoad

Try looking at something similar to Symphyotrichum novi-belgii / New York aster; Aster.

Debra, I will be real curious to see what your plant turns out to be and what else comes from the wildflower mix, I bet your garden is going to be beautiful in a couple of months!

That was written by Darm Crook, an expert in species lilium germination. This is where I go when I need to figure out which method to use for a particular lily species.

Good eye @greene! Aster seed is sometimes included in wildflower mixes isn't it? I looked in our database but didn't find any foliage photos for Symphyotrichum novi-belgii but Debra, check out this photo:

And, as @needrain Donald suggested, it could very well be a variety of Helianthus. There are a few Helianthus maximiliani listed in our database: http://garden.org/plants/searc...

What I'm seeing in the data base for Helianthus maximiliani are leaves with one main vein. Debra's plant has at least three veins per leaf.

I am narrowing my guess to this one:
Fall Aster/Aromatic/Symphyotrichum oblongifolium (formerly Aster oblongifolius).

I have Symphyotrichum oblongifolium growing in the yard. It doesn't quite look right to me for that in my memory. Maybe it has started greening up and I can look tomorrow.

It sure looks more that a month or two old. Helianthus max. has rough leaves. These are smooth.

I would guess Linum (perenne, lewisii) or Linaria (maybe purpurea). Due to the parallel veins, Linaria is more likely.

Except for the parallel veins, it looks lie a Euphorbia, too. Is the sap milky or clear?

Is there some reason why you can't tell us the size of this plant?

Donald, yes, it was a Texas mix.

No, Rick, there isn't a reason other than maybe no one asked. Running six to eight inches at the moment.

Thinking Rick is correct in that they are a type of linum--looked up foliage images and could it be Scarlet Flax? What do you think?

Snapdragon??

Found the empty seed packets just today. The one Snapdragon listed is a Spurred Snapdragon and it could be, although I haven't found any clear photographs of the foliage. Scarlet Flax is the third highest proportion of the mix. Given the quantity coming up and Rick's suggestion, I am thinking more in that direction. Hope to see sometime in the next few weeks.

I had thought snapdragon, too, but I couldn't find any pictures to support it.
