We only had two CA quail in our little neighborhood when we moved to Utah. My DH named them Bob and Irma. They came and ate seed twice a day. Even after a couple of years, we never saw them with babies. I had taken a Magpie with a hurt foot to a bird rehab lady, and she asked if I had any quail where I lived. I told her about Bob & Irma, and she asked if I could try to get them to adopt a bunch of parentless babies that she had. I was willing to try, so I brought them all home in a large cage, and left them in the backyard. Bob and Irma adopted them right away!
All 15 of them! When I went back to pick up the Magpie, the lady asked if I could take the second batch of babies. I figured it was worth a try again. Much to my surprise, Bob and Irma adopted all 15 of those, too! Imagine those two quail with 30 babies! What a sight! 20 years later, and the neighborhood is VERY populated with quail, and I was so glad that I could help with that. We sure did enjoy them! Our Golden Retriever also adopted the whole family, and they would walk within a few feet of him. He'd just lay there, making sure that none of the neighborhood cats got close.
