I have been hearing the Bob Whites call in the last week or two & am thrilled!!!!! Growing up it was so common it became sort of like background noise. But then FL became so populated & we haven't heard Bob White in years & years & years -- well over 20 years. In the past 25 years at least we had not seen any excepting one single occasion. It was very saddening to think the populations had grown so thin. When I heard it the other week I almost got up and danced with joy! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray!

Oh Ann, how lucky you are to hear that precious bobwhite call; it's always been one of my favorite bird sounds ... so peaceful. I love Bobwhites and wondered if their numbers had decreased over the past 20+ years because of them being ground nest builders and the possibility of feral cats (among other nocturnal critters) raiding their nests. It seems like I've heard of feral cat colonies more and more the past ten or so years. Quail are also a game bird so maybe they are absent for periods because of over hunting?

We only had two CA quail in our little neighborhood when we moved to Utah. My DH named them Bob and Irma. They came and ate seed twice a day. Even after a couple of years, we never saw them with babies. I had taken a Magpie with a hurt foot to a bird rehab lady, and she asked if I had any quail where I lived. I told her about Bob & Irma, and she asked if I could try to get them to adopt a bunch of parentless babies that she had. I was willing to try, so I brought them all home in a large cage, and left them in the backyard. Bob and Irma adopted them right away! Hurray! All 15 of them! When I went back to pick up the Magpie, the lady asked if I could take the second batch of babies. I figured it was worth a try again. Much to my surprise, Bob and Irma adopted all 15 of those, too! Imagine those two quail with 30 babies! What a sight! 20 years later, and the neighborhood is VERY populated with quail, and I was so glad that I could help with that. We sure did enjoy them! Our Golden Retriever also adopted the whole family, and they would walk within a few feet of him. He'd just lay there, making sure that none of the neighborhood cats got close.

He was a really special dog. Never tried to kill anything, and never retrieved anything either. Hilarious! I sure do miss him! He'd just lay out in the backyard, protecting those babies, and it was the sweetest thing ever. The biggest shock to me was that the quail trusted him. Never expected to see that, but they had no fear of him. My next Golden would have never done what he did. We told that story many times to new neighbors, when someone would mention how many quail there were. A neighbor even wrote a book about it 4 or 5 years ago, and gave it to us for Christmas. I'm sure he knew that we had brought all of those quail there when it happened, but he probably just forgot. He sure did enjoy hearing about it the second time. Rolling on the floor laughing We have quail here, but they are a lot more wild than Bob and Irma were!

Cool link Lin. I had kind of wondered if we had anything to do with the Bob Whites. Now I'm thinking it's a combo of my neighbor out back & us. They have the right conditions for nesting & we do too. Last year the neighbors out back were not there as the house was still for sale & had not been kept for years so the field was way overgrown & not what they would nest in. Now the neighbors have cleaned things up & they have the proper brush for nesting. Last year we only mowed our place in September so that made a good place for after they hatch and we're doing the same this year. They get to run around with all the wildflowers for cover. I thought I was just imagining we might have something to do with it. Maybe I wasn't. Smiling

We've made lots of quail houses here out of branches and brush, and they love it. It's away from the house so that they are safe from the dogs, and they seem to be really happy! They usually show up for bird seed after the babies are born. Haven't seen any babies yet this year, but I'm sure there will be lots of them along our road. I really love quail! Especially when they are running! They remind me of my Grandma, always going 90 mph, but never really making much progress since they can't seem to pick a direction and stick to it. I couldn't believe it! Not only did a male Painted Bunting show up at the feeder near my kitchen window, but he just sat still, even after I aimed my camera at him! Glad to see they're here!
