It's August. In Texas. The days when newscasters are asking 'How hot did it get?'. The days of frying eggs on the sidewalk. The ten day forecast for here this morning isn't predicting a single day that gets above the upper 80sF. Plus about nine of those days contain a chance of rain at 60% or higher. I expect that forecast to adjust toward something more normal, but if it does matche even a good part of it, I'll count it as one of the strangest weather spells I've ever seen.

My yard isn't the only one enjoying the rains and cooler temps. It's going to be a nice break, isn't it? I've got all the water timers set to Off...just like winter! Speaking of winter, I think we're in for a cold one!! Thumbs down

We were out on the patio watching the rain with our first cup of coffee earlier this morning. DH wondered why someone hadn't come with a way to "spread" the pouring rain out over more days instead of dumping it all at once. "Giant fans?" I asked. Whistling

My backyard (haven't looked out front yet) that a couple of days ago was full of cracks and you crunched everywhere you walked now has puddles in it where the rain has quit soaking in. I don't see anything higher that 88 for us through the 30th and good chances of rain even that far out.

It is the first time I remember it only getting up to the 80's in August. We had 6" in the rain gage this morning that needed to be dumped from the last few days out and a large red oak limb that had fallen on our deck stairs from the weight. I do love the red oaks in the fall but I am seriously considering cutting down all the ones anywhere near a walk way. They are such a hazard. It came down on a wall of my handmade succulent pots and destroyed them Grumbling I am thankful for the rain though. My garden was looking pretty crunchy. Weeding and cutback looks like it will be a pretty big chore in the next few weeks.

It didn't even get up to 80 yesterday! Humidity very high all day, however. I never noticed precip stopping entirely until dark. Over 1 1/4". So far today, nothing.

@Esperanza That's terrible that you lost your handmade pots. We're about to get estimates for tree trimming. I'm dreading it. All those pots to move so the limbs don't hit 'em. Some of our oaks are looking kind of spindley from lack of moisture for so long. I didn't hang any baskets on them this summer for fear they'd crack.

Thank you Sandi and Jolana, it was a bummer seeing all those broken pots but I can make more. It was a rather large live branch that fell and my husband had just walked through that area so I am thankful my pots are the only thing that got damaged. I will loose a significant amount of shade but I am now convinced those trees need to be removed from that walk way. It is excuse to plant some other more decorative trees I guess.

We got another 1.5"'s in the gage this morning and got more rain coming. Wow! 7.5 " in August Blinking

Have emptied a total of 10" from the rain gauge so far since Sunday and it's still raining out there. I haven't been out to inspect for damage from the thunderstorm yet, but I did see some small branches littered everywhere. Louisiana is flooded. I hope everyone is safe!

Well 47 years ago today, I was standing in the kitchen hearing Hurricane Camille blow down huge trees while I tried to keep the door from opening to the wind and rain. The next morning we could see the beach from our front sidewalk because all the trees were stripped. I had a tree limb all the way through my sailboat. Never been so scared in all my life.

Wow. I know I experienced hurricanes as a child, but we weren't anywhere near a body of water (although the water managed to come to us on occasion). Can't believe you rode that one out so close to the beach!

Yep, you were only about 20-30 miles from the center of the eye. Biloxi got blasted. You know, to this day, no one knows how powerful Camille actually was.

After yesterdays raining of whales and elephants (not cats and dogs) We are close to 12" in a little over a week. I am starting to worry about my succulents. My garden is an absolute jungle right now. Everything has put on a few inches. I think I did as well sitting around not working for a whole week Rolling on the floor laughing Time to get back to work. Thank goodness the heat spell was broken.

How did everyone else do?
