No sun here for days and days. At least the rain has stopped for today. More rain comes in tomorrow ahead of a really deep-freeze weather pattern.

The sun was out for 20 minutes this morning. We were putting up the hoophouses and the wind was whipping the plastic around us. We decided to quit until tomorrow. Most of the plants are safely inside the big hoop. Not supposed to freeze tonight....but tomorrow night we're going to have a freeze.

I thawed out in the warm sunshine today. Cleaned up the front yard and got some decorations up before the next rain and freeze. I was actually hot in my shorts and T Shirt. Won't last. Gonna get cold on Thursday. And a freeze Thursday night. Not my favorite. All plants are safe now. But gotta get the faucets covered.

First cold snap of the winter. Freeze tonight. Everything is prepared but me. I dislike cold. Sighing!

We just got back last night from our annual cruise to Mexico. When we left last Fri morning I'd already had the propane heaters on from Thurs night. I've got two 15lb tanks for each one and with the propane formula I found each heater uses about 4.5lbs/day at 4000btu. When I went out to check last nigh after my wife made me help her unpack and put everything away, I of course found the heaters to be off. Checking the thermometer in each greenhouse I saw that the low had been 39 in each one. I'm hoping they'd just run out sometime yesterday and it had cooled down inside. I'll have to go out later today and see how everything looks in the daylight. I had to make a quick run to WM last night and exchange four tanks so I could get it warmed back up in them though.

Speaking of rain, it started raining on us as we got to the outskirts of Houston Friday afternoon and then by the time we got to Galveston it was pouring. The wind was just terrible. Saturday wasn't any better and I'm pretty sure that 'Dickens on the Strand' in Galveston was pretty much rained out. Had some pretty good storms out in the Gulf Saturday night too. But it was nice and warm in Progresso, about 90, and the same in Cozumel. But you could sure feel the change Wednesday as we headed back. I had to sit up on the smoking deck with a quilted shirt on. We about froze getting off the ship in Galveston yesterday morning, So today I'll be out checking on everything hoping it all survived.

The weather guy said this was going to be a historic weather event with temps in the 20s. We rushed around getting everything into the hoops and positioning the heaters. Last night, I went out about 9 and cut my huge 8 ft cane begonia down so I could cover it with a sheet. There was no room for it in the hoops. At 4:30 this morning, I got up to check on the hoops and it was 35, according to my phone. Not quite a historic event. 'Back to the 70s Sunday.

No, not quite historic, Sandi. Are y'all going to get the (predicted) Polar Vortex weather next week?

Agree. It didn't freeze here either. Though 35 is tough for my tropicals to take. I'm glad they were protected. The sun is out today. Now the question, do I unwrap everything today in preparation for 70 degrees? Hmmmm, after all that work I'll give them one more night of nice cold protection.

Not expecting anything but the 70s next week until maybe Friday when it turns chilly again. I'm going to find another weatherman to watch. This one is always over reacting to any storm or freeze possibility.
I'm sick that I chopped down that gorgeous begonia because we were going to possibly be in the low 20s.

It didn't freeze here, either. 32.9°, not even the lowest we've had in fall.

Meteorologists have become perhaps the latest to use hype to market their product, weather forecasting. Now it seems that every storm front, not just hurricanes, has to be named. I see no value in this whatsoever.

It did freeze here but not much. I hope it was enough to kill the flies. Some tender plants are just barely touched and mostly still going like cannas.

DH turned the heaters on, even tho I told him it wasn't going to freeze tonight. Me thinks he didn't want to see his wife melt down if it did freeze! Rolling my eyes.
@drdawg The last bad weather scare was a possible tornado a few months ago. We were actually talking about what was an "indoor room" in our house. Really not one, except possibly a hall bath downstairs. I was awake until nearly 4AM, listening to all the warnings. DH decided to sleep! ( Well, one of us had to get the bike helmets and a mattress to cover in the tub case of tornado).

Our daughter interned at this particular TV station one summer during college. She showed up one morning to find the weather guy in pajamas. He had spent the night there reporting the weather (which was another non-event).

We actually have a well-respected, meteorological program here at State. Because of that, we perhaps have better forecasting than many areas. A lot of the education and training these students go through is "camera-appearance".

I'm so happy it didn't freeze here! I think 35 or 36 was the lowest it got. I moved all the tender plants to the corner of the patio, next to the house, and was prepared to cover them, but decided it wasn't necessary. Glad I guessed right! My Thanksgiving cacti all have buds, with the white one about ready to open some blooms. They seem to be fine

Most of our tropicals can take far colder temperatures than we think they can, Sondra. Two of the keys are how long that cold temperature has been in place and whether the plant(s) has been exposed to frost. I have many of my tropicals, including orchids, that can take low 30's F, so long as there is no frost and those low temperatures are only brief, measured in a few hours.

I just came in from blowing leaves. It was 77 this afternoon. The wind has picked up and the temp is dropping, but tomorrow is supposed to be beautiful. Cool air blows in and temp falls a bit, but still sunny and bright. Saturday evening the temp goes from 79 to 39! Guess winter can't be far behind.
I had to move some big plants to the backyard that had been shoved in the garage when we thought the first freeze was coming. I'll have time to get them into the hoophouse before the "real first freeze" comes early Sunday morning.
@Esperanza, you better get those succulents inside! Whistling

I was in shorts and a tank top today. But things will change starting Friday with a freeze snap on the way for Sunday and Monday. I will be ready. But I sure enjoyed thawing out for a little while.
