Oh, I just love those Hoku Gems, both 'Freckles' and 'Sunspots'. Sadly, they seem to be extra susceptible to black spot woes for me. I had a 'Freckles' and lost it a couple of years ago, and now the 'Sunspots' that Ursula kindly sent me is suffering too. I am fighting the good fight, though.

Kelly 'Lea' is just beautiful but where the heck did that Stlma. name come from? I think that's another that needs to join 'Apple Blossom' as a Whattheheckia.

Elaine, here is some light reading that should clear all of that naming stuff right up for you: http://staugorchidsociety.org/...

Very funny, Jim. I got through most of the first 3 pages before my head began to ache . . . I think for me it will require Scotch on the rocks for at least 3 evenings.

Then I won't remember it after reading it anyway . . .

Jim, looking at Enc dickensoniana, I didn't read about guatemalensis either. As a matter of fact, my records show that I had plants labeled guatemalensis x edithiana and dickinsoniana x edithiana. It was Leon Glicenstein ( formerly with Hoosier Orchids) who set me straight two years ago and now.

My NOID Vanda, what I have now labeled V. tessellate hybrid, has now been in bloom for 24 days. It is interesting (perhaps only to me Sticking tongue out ) how the older flowers, those almost ready to drop off the stem, have changed in appearance. This particular plant has never stayed in bloom for over two weeks before, but I have had it and the 'Orange' in a lot of sun for the last three weeks. The V. Sunlight 'Orange' is really putting on some roots and the Spanish moss seems to enjoy the additional sunlight as well.

The mower guys were here cutting the grass when the skies opened and the deluge descended. I see them now, hold up in their truck trying to wait it out. We can really get a lot of rain in just a few minutes.

A couple of new entries to the bloom table in the OC. First is Encyleyvola [Eyy.] Jim Kelley (E. Atropine x Eyy. Bradley's Judy). This one came from Paul Phelps and just about everything on the name tag was wrong. It took me forever to sort it out but this is the latest.

Also new is (C. Penny Kuroda x C. granulosa). This one is still not registered.

Can someone help me please? I went to the plant database and couldn't find orchids. I must be missing something cause it seems to me that if roses get their own category in the database, then orchids must too...but I can't find an orchid section. If I put in specifics (i.e. 'vanda', 'dendrobium', etc...) i could find some pics but nothing like i was expecting or anticipating. Confused

That's a problem we have here, Patty. Entering specific orchids used to be so doggone difficult, I just quit trying. It is the nomenclature that's the problem (I guess). Perhaps it is easier now. I don't know. Others can give you more information than I since I just don't look anymore, not when it comes to orchids.

I have so far only entered Orchid species into the data base, being very careful to avoid errors.I stay away from entering hybrids. But, if you search the forum, if we posted it you should find it.

I love the Penny Kuroda x!! Interesting bloom on the first x too!

I only input species orchids. There is no real system for entering hybrids. This problem goes back for years.

I like the Penny Kuroda, too. Hi Patty, welcome to ATP!

My Zygolum has both flowers open now. I tried this shot with the flash to see if the color is any better - a bit closer at least.

A little Zygopetalum jumped into my hands the other day. The smoky purple buds caught my eye and I love the sort of pleated leaves. After it came home with me I read where they do not like hot nights so it probably is not the best choice of plants for me. I brought it in to the AC. Do you have better info Elaine?

Mine seems to have acclimated fairly well, Alice. It was an impulse buy from Trader Joes, and this is its second bloom cycle for me. None of my orchids come indoors in the summer.

I think the most important factor is drainage, and enough air flow to allow the roots to dry a bit before the night falls. Water in the morning, dry in the evening. Problems seem to crop up when it rains late in the afternoon, but so far not with this little Zygo.

Check the medium to make sure there's not a soggy wad of moss in there, and if there is you don't really want to re-pot before the blooms are finished, but at least poke some holes in the moss to allow some air down into the pot. A metal skewer or a carving fork are handy tools for this job. Big Grin

Elaine, good to know, thanks. I bought mine (also an impulse buy Crying ) at an orchid presentation. The grower told me this one likes to stay a lot wetter than most, perhaps explaining why yours does fine with afternoon rains. There were crowds of people around and I did not get a chance to ask more questions. I also picked up a little dendrobium not yet in bloom. I used to have such great luck with them until the cold winters happened.
