I don't typically like them doing that, they are usually very splotchy. I would assume that when the bud opens days before it opens completely, it makes it easier for the thrips to get in the flower...?

Ed - All of those are beautiful! I especially like the middle bloom photo. Very interesting markings and quite pretty!

I haven't been on in a while, but I saw this thread and thought I would share my VERY 1st seedling bloom pictures. I really didn't expect a bloom on any of my seedlings this year (I really just started hybridizing) but this one was a surprise. The plant was very small as was the scape, and I think it has to develop a bit more to get real heigth and branching numbers etc., but I really liked the color, and I think I called/texted/emailed all my daylily friends and even people at work!

You have yourself a very beautiful blooming seedling. I love the colors! Congrats!

It should improve over a 3 year period to see what it may continue to develop into. Patience is a real virtue while we all wait to see what our seedlings are going stabilize into.

Thanks for the quick post! I was so excited when this bloomed, and I keep thinking "I can't wait until next year" because I'm hoping to have some more bloom then. I'm sure my neighbors think I'm crazy, but I'm out there all the time just hoping another scape will pop up on one of my seedlings I know that I'll probably have to wait until next year for some more to bloom, but it is just so exciting!

Here is my other seedling rebloom. This is one of the Buddy Hudson crosses (seeds came from Mike). Buddy Hudson is a great parent plant for ruffles! My only concern is I am waiting to see if there is any rust resistance in it. So far, there has been "some" rust on it. Buddy Hudson's parents are both rust resistant. But the "unknown" crossed with this seedling might be susceptible to rust? No way to know until this plant gets larger with more fans. But still worth keeping in a breeding program because of the amazing ruffling and sculpting. Ironically, the actual named parent, Buddy Hudson, is pink! All my seedlings so far have been different shades of yellow.

Added: This produced it's very first bloom on April 30th. Here it is reblooming in July! Ha! Love it!!! It is also in the same bed that I amended a few weeks ago. One tough cookie! Definitely a keeper for that reason! I need tough daylilies here because of the hot and humid climate. Not all my daylilies like my climate. I have some in partial shade that are a lot happier there than in full sun in summer. Can't say I blame them .....

Thanks Becky!!! I probably will register that seedling. It has 3 way branching and over 20 buds.

Also, as a 3 year old seedling it has gotten much better.

Those are fantastic seedlings, Cindy! They're all exceptional, and I couldn't pick a favorite -- love them all!
