I think I may have this in a big container in the front courtyard with patens. I have it in my Trade List, but looking at the locations where I indicated I planted it in the garden, I'm pretty sure what I entered as sagittata is something else. Either that or I lost it all last winter......

Do I recall that it's a little touchy about cold?

I know patens is, which is why I tried putting it in a container where it's more sheltered. Every time I put one of those in the back garden, it freezes. Last year they both came back in the container, but really slowly. I may have to just consider them annuals and get 'em in early!

Sagittata is hardy to 20-25 degrees. I cannot grow patens here in any of its forms, I've finally quit trying...supposedly good for zones 8-10.

Love those blues. Do those tend to be low lying or do they get taller? I guess they must be rather cold tolerant, since we have had a lot of that this winter (although, Sherry, you get less of that I believe). I have a lot of brown plants right now (Lantana, Cape Honeysuckle, Geraniums, some Salvias) and some succulents that look 'melted'. These are things that have made it fine through the last couple winters. We have had down to 23 degrees, so far in Nov and Dec.

We don't really get frost on our property. Didn't know that when we bought here, but I sure am glad. We live in the 'Winterwarm' area of Fallbrook. The last several years I spent going out sometimes at midnight when I feared we would have frost...covering all of the plants on the nursery tables with row cover. When you no longer care, that's when you find out how tough things really are and how good our weather here is. It's been a joy since I decided to let the nursery go that I left things uncovered out there..no more running around out there in the cold dark, covering things up....and...nothing has been injured...lol..The longer you're on your property and the more you get planted, the more microclimates you will end up with there and mimimize the frost damage somewhat I would think.
Sagittata will reach 3-5 ft tall x 3-5 ft wide.

I think I tried to grow this one year, a purchase from Annie's, will try again in the new garden. If I remember right, the snails had a field day with this one.

Thanks for that shot, I can't wait for mine to spread that much. It took quite awhile for me to get mine into the ground and I've still got stuff I want to get planted. It's faster now since I'm not making baskets for everything. If I already have two of something in the ground in baskets, now I'm planting the next ones of the same without wire and I'll see what the gophers really go after.
Cutting back all of the native salvias this a.m. and what wonderful scents! Also this year I'll see just exactly how drought tolerant some of the plants are...the ones that are very well established will get very little water. The natives are all together on the other side of the property and they get no water anyway. At least the ground is still quite wet from the heavy rains we got and hopefully we'll get some more. I do hope that wasn't the extent of our winter rains. You guys up north get so much more than we do down here.....sigh....

Here in San Jose we average the rainfall around 15". When we move to Sebastopol where Zuzu lives, it averages around 40".

Hmmmm. I hadn't realized there was that much difference there. When we were living in CoCo, the rainfall was about 20 and we also had a well. When we were looking for property around Mendo and Ft Bragg, Brookings, I knew the rainfall was a lot, but we were also looking at property in Occidental, Guerneville, etc. and I hadn't known the rainfall there was that much more....that's wonderful. What a difference that makes. When we were moving back from Whidbey, we were intending to go to Santa Rosa and the day we hit there it was raining. After 3 years of rain in the PNW, it just didn't appeal to me and we kept heading South. I'm sorry that we didn't stay with our intentions of Santa Rosa. Our average rainfall here is about 9 inches.

There can be such a diverse difference just in a matter of a few miles, that's what's so great about Calif. A 20 minute drive from us into the Santa Cruz mountains, they average 60"!
If you ever drive north, you need to stop by in Sebastopol, just 8 miles west of Santa Rosa, nice & quiet, population around 7,500-8000 I think. Santa Rosa is a little bit too busy for me but there are some nice places along the outer edges of the town. Of course, I grew up and live in a city with over 1,000,000 population so I think the country life will take some getting used to! I am soooo ready!

Yes, we always liked Sebastopol. I have a feeling that in the last 30 years it may have grown too much..as has most of California unfortunately.

Yes they do, I would never recommend a short sale to anyone, especially one like ours with 2 bank loans on it to go through the approval and agreement process with, unless they are prepared to go through a long wait and possible heartbreak.

The first, BofA, did an appraised amount back in Nov. that we agreed to and then while we were waiting for word on the second, we got a new contract from BofA stating that an investor now wanted $50,000 more, which was an amount based on an Automated Valuation Models (AVM) created online from basic info like lot size, house size, past neighborhood sales that can go back years, etc., nothing that based it on current housing market and actual condition of house, in other words, a ludicrous number! So we went ahead and ordered our appraisal through our broker and that too came back with the first original amount so we countered back and that was the week after Christmas so of course everything gets delayed due to the holidays. We finally got that back last week and they agreed again to that first original amount (what a stupid waste of time!) but the agreement had errors in it, a 2010 date and a closing date of 1/28 which is only 2 weeks away. Stupid errors that again add more delays. The listing agent has to get those fixed.
Then last Friday, we finally got the agreement from the second, also with an error (an incorrect selling price) They want 10% of the second loan amount which is almost $29,000, BofA agreed to give them only $3000 from the sale of the house which leaves $26,000 for a balance. The listing agent says the seller only has $3000 set aside for moving costs, which we don't believe, you don't live in a house for over 1 1/2 years not paying anything towards the 2 loans and not have more set aside! Glare So we will try get him to at least meet us part way. As much as it's totally unfair that we have to possibly pay for most of that difference despite it being the seller's defaulted loan, we like the house & location enough to pay more for it but it seriously cuts into our remodeling money and would force us to put things on the back burner. Brad has access to his pension (without paying penalties) in a year so we can wait until then to do any needed updates. So once we get all the numbers worked out with the seller, we hope to close some time in Feb., that is, if everything goes right. You never know.
We are tired of this, it's taken a lot out of us emotionally (I went through several bad weeks where I did a lot of crying when we thought the whole thing was about to collapse) and so far we just haven't seen anything else come along that felt right despite our continuing to look. I told Brad I will have no gardening money for a while and will have to grow from seeds, cuttings, buy plug plants from Mamjack's great co-ops here, trade for things and maybe even get that resale licenses I have been considering so I have access to wholesale plants & supplies, do a little side work. The bigger trees, fountain and pond will have to wait. We'll also make full use of Freecycle and Craigslist to stretch our creative ideas!

Sebastopol isn't growing, Sherry. It's almost doing the opposite, in fact. When I moved here 25 years ago, the population was 7,500. It started inching up a few years later and almost reached 7,800, but now it's back down to 7,500 again.

"Downtown," the busy part of Main Street where most of the stores are clustered, is still only one block long, with a few businesses scattered in the adjacent blocks. We do have a MacDonald's and a Taco Bell on the outskirts of town, but Kentucky Fried Chicken and the two 7-11's packed up and left years ago. It's not the right town for fast food.

Oops, I almost forgot to comment on the fabulous color of that Salvia.
