I've always been taken by the saturated white of Lilium candidum floral photos. I've yet to see one face to face. (The bulb you gave me, Tracey hasn't bloomed yet. I never thought I'd say this about any of my gardens, but I don't think it is alkaline enough where it is.)

Remember DG had a Moon Garden forum? I posted there once when I found that my Wolf's Lilac (Syringa wolfii) flowers positively glowed in the moonlight.

I think some years mine does better than others. My soil is sooooo alkaline, like 7.8 in some spots. When I soil tested it one year, I almost fell over when I got the results. I have to work really, really hard to keep my orientals happy and even then, they aren't that happy. For the love of the lilium, I keep trying the stuff I love that challenges me and my soil. A bucket full of blueberries is a nice reward Smiling The lovely scents of the lilies and the yummy blues(berries) keep me going. The rewards are too priceless to stop trying.... Lovey dubby

Blueberries and lilies... what an idea! I have a blueberry patch at my parent's house - almost 30 years old now and the original plants are still going strong. Mostly U of MN half-high releases (crosses of the native low bush Vaccinium angustifolium and high bush V. corymbosum) : Northsky, Northblue, St. Cloud. One high bush called Northland. The half-highs are very consistent producers, barring severe droughts. (I am not able to water them since they are 500ft from a water source.) In years that they don't do well, the Northland does, and vice versa. My favorite is Northblue. Of the half-highs, Northsky would work best with lilies, I surmise, because it is only a foot or less high.

Polly, I imagine you use a selection from your native low bush type?

We have quite a selection here. I've got Bluecrop, Blueray, Darrow, Duke, Patriot, Reka is new. Legacy, Arlen, Berkeley, Atlantic, Herbert (a favorite),

Where I have the blueberries and lilies planted they are in rows, along with Japanese and siberian irises. Not pretty garden beds, so I have all heights of the blueberries. It was origionally intended to be a cutting garden, but is now my sales area for the irises.

The thing I love about blueberry bushes, besides the yummy berries of course, is their beautiful fall foliage color, an orangish red here on all of the different varieties. So pretty to be around while doing Fall cleanup.

What better treat that munching on blueberries while you walk around enjoying your lilies? there's nothing like it.

I've hardly been able to get a ripe blueberry without netting them. Dang birds. Robins, especially. And the half-highs need to stay on the bush blue for at least a few days to reach full flavor and sweetness. I suspect though, that the more acid your soil the more sweet they will be earlier.

I put floating row cover over them when the berries start to ripen. The birds don't get caught in it.

That's a great idea. They have never gotten caught at my parent's, I think because we make a net house over the blueberries rather than just drape the netting. But I have caught a bird or two when I drape netting over my honeyberries at my house. Robins are pretty stupid birds. Catbirds, they are a smart one. I've watched as one went under the netting (I hadn't fasten it to the ground), ate the berries, and left by the exact same route.

MMMM honeyberries! I bought my honeyberries from Berries Unlimited. They are excellent.

I just drape the cloth. Move it from one shrub to another when the berries get ripe.

Have you seen the new Pink Lemonade blueberry? That's going to be my next try.

Pink Lemonade.... didn't know there was such a thing. What's its parentage? High bush, low bush, or a mix? There is a variety of wild blueberry that grows near our cabin near the Canadian border that has black berries. Really, it's a blueberry without the powdery bloom that gives them the light blue color.

I'd have to get used to the pink lemonade color, but maybe the birds wouldn't find them so enticing. The Cedar Waxwings take over my serviceberry tree with the first blush of color on the green berries, but they haven't touched the honeyberries. And there are no Waxwings at my parent's in the woods.
