I could not resist this Vanda Pachara Delight blue one, it is tiny and looks like first bloom but it was reduced price so got to have it. This is half the price I paid for wih my first one.

Thumb of 2015-11-14/GigiPlumeria/a60325

This one I can't help but bring this home. This will not be put in any vase but will be hanging from our oak tree. Now I have 5 Vandas and four colors.

Thumb of 2015-11-14/GigiPlumeria/b0e4b3

This is my Vanda Pachara Delight Pink's roots, very thick and healthy. The brown spot is contained, so this will surely be a winner.

Thumb of 2015-11-14/GigiPlumeria/744298

My original blue one is still struggling but it has thick short roots above the black rot and recovering nicely. I'm waiting for it to fully recover before posting a before and after photo. Crying

I think the one I bought is a "vandacious hybrid", Ascocenda Saint Valentine 'Pachara'. I also saw it called 'Sweetheart'. My camera never captures reds the way I see them. Mine is a deeper cherry or raspberry red.

Alice, I think you have V. Saint Valentine (V. Kasem Wirat x V. Peggy Foo). There is no Vanda named Sweetheart. Perhaps it is a clonal name for V. Saint Valentine but I can't find it.

So those two Vandas = a Ascocenda?

When I was looking it up I came across this site for a grower in Sarasota - what a name for a business!

No, look again at what I wrote. You have a Vanda. The boffins have done away with all Ascocendas, changing them to Vandas.

Thanks Jim, I was wondering what's the difference between Ascocendas and Vandas too.

Alice, that is a really beautiful color. I looked for that color but I could not find any color closer to yours. That's a really beautiful one. Now that Jim has the info on your Vanda, you should add it to the database.

I also saw your post on the other thread, is your covered patio the one facing the water? I would feel the same way if I have that view too!

Jim, thank you, now I understand. I wondered about 2 Vandas making something else. Sort of like two squirrels making a raccoon. Didn't make sense to me. Boo on the boffins.

Gigi, I will try different settings on the camera and if I can get the color right I will add it to the database.

Gigi, Alice, a hybrid of Ascocentrum x Vanda was called Ascocenda, that was before Ascocentrums were renamed to Vanda. So now a Vanda x Vanda is a Vanda.

Sighing! I am too old to keep all this straight. By the time I learn a name the boffins will change it. When I speak to groups invariably someone will correct me on a plant name. When I explain why a certain plant that they might have grown for years has a new name/family they are usually annoyed, confused or both. DNA can be a curse

From now on it is either pretty or it is not, that will be my description. Hilarious!

One would wish many of the new names are based on Nomenclature derived through DNA analyses. Unfortunately this is mostly not the case.

I wish they would built a whole new nomenclature based on DNA and stick with it. Not " oh what we do with this one, ah let's just stick it overthere. Oh this one is already taken, well, we just stick it with another Genus" etc etc. When Iwanagaara was changed to Jackfowlieara I could only ask why oh why??? Looked a bit willy nilly to me, not based on DNA at all, but rather try to honor a person? Exaggerating somewhat.....

I'd say sensible, not simple at all.

Thank You! Ibis and Ken.

I agree with you Ibis, it is so nice to see more than just one bloom in a year for the Vanda. I think this is going to be my new addiction.

I'm with you, Gigi. Now that I am able to care better for my Vandas, they seem to be much easier and more generous bloomers than most of the other orchids. No pots, medium or re-potting needed most of the time, either.

I do have one that I'm going to "top" this summer.
