If you have a window with lots of sun in the winter, I'd agree with Tara, Alice. Go for it.

An ideal spot would be over your kitchen sink, though, so you can spray it and let it drip into the sink.

I agree I agree with Elaine and Tara, give it a try. Tara, that is a nice set-up you have. This will be my first time to over winter mine.

My V Pachara Delight blue that was in the Hurricane vase is not doing great since the black rot incident. I almost lost it but it is shooting new roots now, so I think it will be fine. The V Pachara Delight Pink I purchased from Lowe's for $10 less (not in a vase) is doing great, And have thick roots.

Tomorrow, I'm going to check out our Lowe's because they have more colors. I would love to have a red one or the one that was brownish gold color.

Glad to read that the Vanda is turning the corner. Some orchids can take a lot of stress and still bounce back. I am nursing a Ren. bella that is literally a stalk with two leaves and a root tip about 3 mm just peeking out. Normally I would trash a plant that bad, but these are really hard to find unless you go to a big show and preorder.

If I find one at Tamiami in January, I will probably trash this one. In the meantime, I am trying to get it to come around. Now that I see root action, I am going to put some rooting hormone on it to see if it will grow a little faster.

That's what I'm exactly doing with this one Melissa. At one time, the leaves of my Vanda were shut and the leaves were wrinkled, which is a sign that it was on its way out. Now, with nubs of roots peeking out just above were the rot affected the stem. The leaves are now starting to open up. You can bet if this recovers, I will not ever let it go. I get a lot of satisfaction nursing back dying orchids, it's a great story to tell.

Normally, if I'm on "staycation" I can watch it closely and nurse it back faster.

We were at Lowes yesterday, and they had a huge selection of Vandas! All in bloom, different colors, but all were $30.00. A little to steep for me right now! Sighing!

The Vanda, by far, has been the easiest of the orchids for me to grow. Love them! No need to pot, or re-pot! Got to love that! Thumbs up

You guys made me do this! I went back to Publix and they still had the raspberry colored Vanda. It was the smallest plant of the bunch but I liked the color. I may have to check out Lowe's tomorrow as I have to pass it on my way to a presentation in a neighboring county. I don't hold any hope they will have anything but miracles do happen.

New Vanda is on the ledge in the bathroom. You can see I have lots of windows in other parts of this house but so little light comes through the 3M film. If a 3M saleswoman ever tells you it will not impact plant growth she is lying. Begonias in all sizes and shapes will line the room as the weather cools, they can handle the lower light, they just don't bloom.

When I was moving things on the bathroom ledge, I noticed both the Zygopetalum and the little den have buds starting. In addition to the window behind the ledge there is a skylight directly above so they will get adequate light and humidity in this room.

I went to our Lowe's and they don't have the red or the golden brown color that I liked. They have a lot of pink and blues but I have them already. I agree with you Tara, my hubby likes it because there is no "dirt or bark" :).

Alice, that is a beautiful raspberry color, I didn't see that at our Lowe's. The only thing you have to remember is to follow their instruction on the Vanda care. Try not to water the leaves but soak the roots well when in the hurricane vase and let the roots dry before watering again. Keep us posted. Hurray! Hurray!

Thank you Melissa.
I searched for info on the Silver Vase Vandas from Publix, I couldn't find much of anything on the Vandas but I found a lot about their Phals. They have developed a patented process to dye white Phals blue. Now I am wondering if these Vandas might also be "designer colors."

I have not seen the Raspberry but am sure my blue and Pink Vandas are real colors. I think the "dyed" orchids will show some dyes on the roots. The roots of the orchids absorb the color and it travels to the bloom. My Vandas roots do not have any hint of dye and from what I can see from your photos, Yours look like the roots are not dyed also.

No, the roots on mine do not look dyed and I only saw it about their Phals. There were several listings like this one.
http://www.gpnmag.com/silver-v...

I have an inkling it is not a traditional dye that is infused but some sort of substance that causes a chemical reaction in the flowers.
I like my raspberry colored one no matter how it got that way. Smiling

That really is a lovely color, Alice but if the orchid was treated, then when it re-blooms for you the flowers might be a different color. Yours at least looks like it probably is a genuine color.

Same as the Phals that are dyed blue. Most of them will re-bloom white. Just my opinion but I think if anyone wants an orchid that color they should just buy a fake one anyway. Then it will bloom all the time in the same color. Big Grin

It is interesting to red that they have not updated this link, it still says "Silver Vase says as the healthy orchid grows, a new stem will probably bring white flowers, "though it is too early to know for sure."" Well, from what I hear they do re-bloom white.

I had read somewhere, concerning the Phals...that the dye was injected into the spike...and if you looked closely you could see the pin prick from the needle...maybe they do the Vanda's the same way?

I hope not, I researched the two Vanda Pacharas I bought and I know these colors exist. I think Tara's Vanda rebloomed already.

I didn't see anything written up about the Vandas - just their Phals. I was really looking to see if there were any names associated with the different colors but I couldn't find anything.
