Wow Regina i enjoyed reading your story. Glad to hear you have land aplenty. If i went that hog wild the association might have something to say about it. I will really have to start selling once all my starts turn into clumps.
When i found out i could work for daylily starts the addiction really kicked in. I only have one to put into the ground tonight and was thinking about the bed addition i am planning but it has been close to 90 here for the last few days so not tonight.

Our temps have been in the nineties too with horrible humidity, so I feel your pain. I did refrain from ordering any DL for fall, but only because I am working to get the greenhouse and bed finished Smiling

And....I am also working on a daylily unit for my students at school. They are seventh grade gifted and talented. I was fortunate enough to get seeds from Cindy (Hemlady) and the idea from Lisa (Lilydaydreamer). The students are going to experiment to find the best way to germinate the seeds, then we will grow them out. While they are growing out, students will be researching the growth and flowering habits of the parents, then make predictions about what their daylily could possibly look like, as well as general plant genetics.

My goal is to have them be able to take a daylily home with them that they can choose to register if they like. I also want to get some guest speakers ( anyone interested?) to come in to speak with them about hybridizing. Last, I would love to plan an end of the year field trip to a daylily garden where they can see the beauty in person. That is going to be tricky since the garden needs to be in bloom, and my local ones will not quite be ready. I'm wondering if South Georgia or upper Florida would be a good choice...lots of planning to do! Chaperones, anyone?? Smiling

I'll be dreaming about daylilies, but my beds will have to wait until spring to see some new arrivals. Wait...they're already full! I'm sure there's a spot somewhere in the yard where the sods not looking too great and could be enhanced by daylilies Lovey dubby

Did I read that right...you will have some for sale this spring??? Rolling on the floor laughing

I very well could and should. I used to ship die cast cars all over the country but live tubers and fans are a different thing and i am still trying to figure it out as far as cleaning and tagging the fans. I know priority mail is best so i figure on trying to sell multiple cultivar in one shipment to make it worthwhile to the buyer. I have Paypal so no problem there. Guess i still need more advice on that.
I think its really great what you are doing with the students after all it is biology and science and horticulture. I know the next great hybridizer is in your class somewhere. Thumbs up

Regina - Awesome idea of a lesson plan with daylilies. I envisioned something similar myself, but it likely won't happen at an elementary school level. I think your plan will be a huge success! Good luck!

My addiction began back in 2003 and it was strange. I simply woke up one morning and decided I needed to add a few daylilies to my garden,
started looking at them on the computer and I was hooked!!! So many DLs, so little time. I frantically yanked the telephone directory out and
started looking up DL gardens and farms nearby, located one not far from me and drove there that very day. In fact, it was July 3. I was amazed
at the selection and display and drove home with about 10 or so, but with a list a mile long! Been collecting ever since.

A local DL club has a show/sale every June and I managed to add quite a few to my collection through them, around $2 a fan. What a deal!
Plus my own DL club also had exchanges and sales and that helped. I became quite proficient at spotting DL signs everywhere and even
drove down east to Marietta Gardens for their annual sale one year. Oh, my. What can I say? It grew from there and I never looked back.

do without them! I guess when my yard is filled with DLs, irises and dahlias, I'll start filling in my 90YO neighbor's yard!

Yes! That's the ticket...I need a 90 y.o. neighbor!...hmmmm....where to get one of those... Rolling on the floor laughing

I have about 8-10 daylilies at my mom's house, although those are daylilies I bought with her tastes in mind, not mine or my hybridizing needs. I have considered giving some of my future seedlings to neighbors, renting local community garden plots, or even approaching my neighbors with a plan of "hey, you can have this daylily for free if you let me monitor it/register it/take pieces if it intro-worthy". I've also considered buying a plot of land or approaching my HOA about using some of our community space. :-P yeah, I'm in waaaay too deep. *Blush* Hilarious!

I think that the addiction to daylilies is similar to gambling addiction. You wake up in the morning, head out to the garden, and what you see is new and unpredictable. If it beautiful it is extremely reinforcing. So, you do whatever you can to increase the reward.
It is the transient nature of the reward that is addicting. If it looked the same everyday it would not be as reinforcing.
Luckily for us addicts, most of what we do is healthy for our bodies, emotions, and minds.

I didn't realize that I had a daylily collection until this year. Every year, I take pictures of all of my flowers in my garden. This year, I started an album on FB and suddenly it dawned on me...... I had quite a little collection of them....... 25ish varieties to be exact!

Then I started searching trying to find the names of my NOID daylilies....... that was my undoing!! I never knew that there were 79,000+++ varieties of them!!!! What????? Then I stumbled upon ATP! Then I stumbled upon Oakes....OMG! Then I found Homestead Farms...... and then came Maryott!!!!

I have a problem! Two orders from Oakes, two from Homestead, one large on from Maryott and a small one from Harmon Hill, plus a visit to all of the local nurseries in my area and I think that I have acquired about 60 new varieties of daylilies!!!! Crying Whistling

Before this summer, I had 3 large flower beds on our 2 acres of land. Two of them are sunny gardens and the third is a filtered/mostly shade garden. Now I have 4 gardens and could have many more!

I totally re-did my large stone garden out front. I have added many of my new daylilies but it will also continue to house all of my NOID and older daylilies. It is out along our road and all of my neighbors get to enjoy it a lot more than I do because of the big line of trees between the road and our house.

I just dug out a brand new daylily bed along the side of our house. It will be my themed garden with sections that have themes. Including my "All in the Family" selections.

My next plan is to redo the garden in my front yard...... it is going to be rid of the out of control black eyed susans and foxglove and my daylilies will be re-situated and better laid out. That garden is 12x16 feet..... I think.

So much to my dismay, I must admit that I have an addiction!!!! I am sure my grandmother up in heaven is in her glory and well when my dad comes out to visit later this month, he may realize that I have indeed inherited his love for plants too.... albeit daylilies and not tropical fruit trees and ginger plants!! Big Grin

I have an appointment with spring!
Hello my name is Claudia, aka lottabeds13. I am another hemaholic.

I am admitting to a theft.
I've never told anyone this before, but after listening to all of you, I am finally going to 'fess up. Because I think I have, at long last, found a group of people who will understand.
Immediately following the closing of our first home, about 10 years ago, when we were done signing all those legal forms at the attorney's office, we got into our car to leave. I took the wheel, and drove like a madwoman back to the house that was no longer ours. Nearly scared my husband to death. I had to beat the new owners to their new home.
You all know what's coming, right?
I left rubber in that driveway, as I took off with the last of the DLs that I thought I could leave behind. Left a trail of soil up their driveway and several mysterious holes in their yard. Don't know if they ever figured things out.

Since then? Well, you all know how the rest of the story goes. I don't count them anymore.
Thanks for listening, fellow addicts.
