I find Green Lacewing eggs all the time but I just Googled what the adult looks like and I can't say that I see them. Maybe they're good at hiding. I read that they'll attack caterpillars so I'm not sure how "beneficial" that is in a butterfly garden. Still, I usually leave things alone. I always figure nature knows best. That balance is there and humans just tend to screw it up.

I'm thinking of relocating dozens of anoles (lizards) because this latest generation is out of hand! I've seen two of my Phaon Crescents get eaten. Crying Grumbling Yesterday, I had to put down a Long-Tailed Skipper whose wings didn't form properly and I swear that seconds after I used the guillotine (scissors), there was a lizard with the head in its mouth! I was feeling bad enough. Jeez! But that's one reason I give them a "quick death" over the alternative. It's still pretty depressing.

But lots of stuff was good over the weekend and I'll tell you guys all about it - with pictures!- as soon as I wake up.

Picture time! I had to go back and see what the last picture I posted was so I would know where to start up again. First, here's some pictures I took while hanging around the house on Friday.

It was pretty windy so I couldn't get a good photo of this Barred Sulphur (alba form).

Long-Tailed Skipper on pentas, too. There are bunches of them out right now. The second photo is one on a porterweed leaf.

This is the caterpillar I found in with the Phaon Crescents. But it doesn't eat Frogfruit, it eats grass. That makes it the easiest caterpillar to feed! I think his coloring looks better in real life.

Ooh...a Pipevine Swallowtail! Don't they know to stay in their chrysalis? Even here in FL it's getting rarer to see Swallowtails. I've seen a couple of Spicebush STs, but that's it.

So do they actually overwinter in their chrysalises?
What about in the north?

questions questions....

I think that's a first time for me (for a Pipevine) usually here it's the Black Swallowtail or the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, once a Zebra Swallowtail.

As I understand it they do overwinter in their chrysalis even up north. Amazing isn't it?

I would think they'd have to overwinter in their chrysalises particularly up north! Some species overwinter as eggs and some even in the caterpillar stage. Offhand, I remember something about various Fritillaries laying eggs on violets that don't hatch until spring. And I know the Viceroy is one rare caterpillar that builds a nest that it overwinters in. But it seems like the chrysalis phase it the more popular one to spend the winter in.

Jack, I'm glad you got to see a Pipevine! Hurray! They're so iridescent blue; I love them!

Well, some certainly do head south. Then, they "repopulate" in the spring as they move north. I know one year I was up at Grandma's in WV in April and saw a Variegated Fritillary. I was just super excited because even though they live in FL, too, I hardly ever see them. When I sent it to BAMONA they said it was a very early record for that area but they still believed it had moved northward and had not spent the winter there. I felt pretty proud of myself. I hadn't thought about the fact that it was pretty early in the year up there. By mid-April it's a party down here in FL! Hilarious!

Ok, I'm still catching up on photos. On Saturday, I went to Joshua House where some ladies were going to be renovating the butterfly garden. I emailed the lady in charge and offered some Wooly Pipevine and Privet Cassia (Senna ligustrina) since you guys know I prefer natives.

Here are the before shots.

As you can see, it's pretty much just the two raised beds. Here's the after. They trimmed a lot of the plants, replaced the old with new, and viola!

Thumb of 2015-10-27/mellielong/fc82c8 Thumb of 2015-10-27/mellielong/60e3c0 Thumb of 2015-10-27/mellielong/db10a2

They put a soaker hose through the beds so my job is to turn it on when I get there to work on the library and then turn it off when I leave. I was there today, but luckily it's been drizzling pretty steady now for hours. That's good because we haven't had much rain lately. Unfortunately, Mom and her church friends were supposed to go on a dolphin cruise out of Tarpon Springs today and it got canceled. The seas are 3-5 feet and choppy so unless you enjoy being nauseous, not a good day for boating.

While I was at Joshua House, I talked to a few of the boys and showed them some caterpillars. We also had a few butterfly visitors. There are tons of White Peacocks on the property. I'm so jealous!

We had a Monarch but it was a boy. Still, if he finds a lady friend we have Tropical Milkweed, Giant Milkweed, and White Swamp Milkweed!

One of the milkweeds the lady in charge had purchased had a caterpillar on it, but I forgot to take its picture. The boys had fun trying to find it as it moved around the plant throughout the morning.

Okay, catching up on more pictures. Sunday I went to MOSI. I was thinking of starting back either last weekend or this weekend. I was leaning toward the latter but the boss asked if someone could come in and water some of the new plantings this weekend so I said, "Sure". Although, I warned I probably wouldn't be able to do much because dragging those hoses around is hard and I knew I would be tired from Joshua House the day before. Fortunately, the area that needed watered was near the hoses. And it rained yesterday and this morning so we're pretty wet here.

I was actually loading stuff in my car yesterday and came back inside to get a second load. As soon as my wet sneaker hit our ceramic tile, I tilted forward and fell. My right knee got the worst of it and my left wrist has a bit of a twinge when I move it. One nice thing about living with your parents is that they still come running when you start howling in pain. Nothing like having your mom there to kiss your boo-boos. I thought my knee would be all black and blue today, but it's just red. Doesn't hurt as bad as yesterday, though.

Anyway, I have pictures. Before I left for MOSI, I checked my White Peacock chrysalis and it had really turned colors!

Thumb of 2015-10-29/mellielong/fe77e0 Thumb of 2015-10-29/mellielong/2ca65f

Once, I got to MOSI, I started checking things out. We still had some Malachites in the flight cage.

Thumb of 2015-10-29/mellielong/c624de Thumb of 2015-10-29/mellielong/0d1cb3

There was an escapee turtle I had to throw back in the pond exhibit. Sometimes when the ginger grows a certain way and the water level hits just right, they can climb up and out of the water. And let me tell you, I'm positive that I enjoy throwing them back in way too much! Sploosh!

Thumb of 2015-10-29/mellielong/7972e4

Back in the flight cage, it's mostly Zebra Longwings. First of all, they're long-lived due to their pollen-eating habit. Also, they mate a lot.

Thumb of 2015-10-29/mellielong/51a13d

In the lab, someone had set a chrysalis box with a Buckeye in it over by the sink. I looked at it, and the wing was a little malformed, but it didn't look that bad. So I took it in the flight cage and it could fly all right. Kept wanting to land on the concrete, like so many of them do, but we had a talk about that. I think the concrete warms up fast and they like the heat. Plus, a lot of butterflies bask on the ground. It's just that usually I'm scaring them out of the grass.

Thumb of 2015-10-29/mellielong/002e70

I got to release some Sleepy Oranges. We only have so many chrysalis boxes and lids so sometimes we pin two in the same box, especially the smaller butterflies. When I walked in, only one had emerged, but when I opened the lid, they were both there!

Thumb of 2015-10-29/mellielong/b146e7

I had a Monarch that must have emerged right before I walked in because it was still wrinkly and swollen when I saw it. But it smoothed out those wings real fast so I moved him over to dry off in the flight cage.

Thumb of 2015-10-29/mellielong/18f330

This Malachite wasn't quite ready to wake up so it was still pretending to be a leaf.

Thumb of 2015-10-29/mellielong/8ed84b

This Long-Tailed Skipper thought it could hide from me after I kept chasing it with my camera.

Thumb of 2015-10-29/mellielong/dbdfe4

Only one pair of Zebra Longwings was mating. The rest were just chilling out or nectaring.

Thumb of 2015-10-29/mellielong/9414dc

I got to release one of the Phaon Crescents I brought from home back when they were eggs! Thumbs up

Thumb of 2015-10-29/mellielong/7ad319

I saw a Barred Sulphur (alba form) that got loose in the outer enclosure. I didn't want to go back in and get a net because I figured I'd never spot it again. Plus, I'm thinking, "They're small. I should be able to catch it with my hands." They're quick, too, so it took me several tries. The hardest part was unlocking the padlock on the flight cage with my left hand. I'm right-handed but I had the butterfly in that one. I released it and it flew to the top of our Kumquat tree.

Thumb of 2015-10-29/mellielong/28d550

I spotted a Gulf Frit outside and told it that it was lucky I didn't have a net. I was just there to water.

Thumb of 2015-10-29/mellielong/747ce3

I got home and the White Peacock was still in its chrysalis. But it wasn't long before it emerged!

Thumb of 2015-10-29/mellielong/4caed0 Thumb of 2015-10-29/mellielong/ba3c2a

So that brings us to last night. Everything was fine around dinner time (6 pm). I went to Barnes and Noble to buy a bunch of books for the library and I get home about 9 pm. And a Black Swallowtail had emerged! First off, they're in the same container as the Skipper chrysalises so I've been checking it every day and I don't remember any chrysalis turning dark. Also, they're supposed to be overwintering! Bad Swallowtail! Naturally, it goes in the dark, cool bathroom for the night. I wake up about noon (up late reading some of those books, naturally) and I see the Swallowtail now has a Long-Tailed Skipper friend! Blinking What kind of butterfly emerges in the dark? I mean, even at noon my bathroom is pretty dark because it has no windows. The one window I have in the bedroom faces the north so it's not like I get a lot of light in here. I released them both this morning. Crazy butterflies.

Thumb of 2015-10-29/mellielong/b837d9 Thumb of 2015-10-29/mellielong/0b5ffc Thumb of 2015-10-29/mellielong/3411d6

While I'm outside, I see there's a package from Barnes and Noble so I bring it in. I had a store coupon and a website coupon! I had to use them both! Rolling on the floor laughing I open the box, check out the books, and then put them in my room. I glance at the container again and see that another Long-Tailed Skipper just emerged! How did I miss that? I know - I was looking at books. Hilarious!

Thanks for the sympathy! Yeah, as long as I don't touch the actual spot where I fell, it doesn't hurt much.
