That yellow & white was my favorite. Try again for pink. If it is as nice as the yellow, it should be great.

You guys are awesome Big Grin glad your enjoying my seedlings it was a good bloom season here it had it's challenges with the weather but I was Happy to be able come out and find these unfolding. I wish more of them would have bloomed so I could of gone through them this season but at least I got a preview of what could pop up in some of these crosses, it was not fun to dig them all and try to keep the ones that didn't bloom in a clump to be transplanted but I definitely have some fun plants to work with in the future.

Deb.. I liked the blend of colors in that one also it will be pretty beside some of my other Orange projects Smiling

Mary Ann.. Yes same seedling it's the best of the 3 the white stripe really makes it pop but should be quite a few more bloom next year from that cross they grew well.

Jane.. Thanks it had a good color to it..

Rob... LOL Rolling on the floor laughing Hilarious! drooling gravy

Sherry.. :big grin: Thanks If I could only pick 5 of my seedlings to keep it would have made that list, really hoping it does well through the winter I ended up with lot's of seeds from that one. Will have to wait and see if our friend likes it when he visit's in 2017 it may make it's way to Santa Cruz someday Smiling

Bonnie.. Thank You !!! Lot's more to show you from here and some of the beautiful creations from the guys in Oregon and California there plants were just Outstanding this year Drooling and I'm looking forward to all there catalogs to see what got names.

Paul... Thanks!! Was hoping you would join in and give me your thoughts on some of these Smiling I did get some unique colors and patterns but very few were the total package I'm finding out how hard it is to get a perfect plant Smiling hoping next year we get a few more buds and some nice stems on these.

Lucy.. Thanks and I did just that Smiling it was crossed to Keppel's (Strawberry Shake) looking for pinks, it is a awesome plant and good parent and I have seen beautiful pinks from it ..( Friendly advice ) another one of Kieth's that grows well here I was looking for pink lines on the falls with the yellow band, proably stretching things a bit there but Shrug! maybe and one of my own seedlings from (Just Witchery X My Beloved) it was a White had a excellent flower and plant.

Tom.. I don't know what do with that one yet maybe Kieth's (Espionage) to see if I can improve the plant but if it looks the same in May it will get put on lot's of different things and a sib cross with it may happen Smiling . With a lot of these crossed in 2013 I was looking for something that was a excellent parent for form and growth that would let me pass lots of different colors and patterns onto it and keep all those good qualities in tact. A good example of what I wanted to find would be Kieth's ( Silk Road ) the 06-77 plants that he has introduced are a wonderful assortment of colors and everyone of them is perfect (Branching, Buds, Growth) it is stunning to see them all in clumps in his field. I spent hours Drooling over them wishing they were in my garden so I could put pollen on them nodding so glad my favorites of those got names and I can pollen daub with them in May Hilarious!

I had a lot of surprises this year and this was one of them when they started blooming the fun part of using the newer plants in crosses is the pedigrees are such a mix of different lines and genes you don't know what you will get this is one example. I crossed (Raging Tide) onto (First Avenue) looking for Ruffled Blue's... Raging Tide is a excellent grower here and I have seen a lot of good plants come from it and ( First Avenue) is another one that is mostly Keppel genes and when I read the pedigree the pod parent was a sibling to (Silk Road & Bollywood Lovey dubby ) and it grows well here so I thought let's see what happens.

The majority of these when they started blooming were unimpressive but about the 3rd or 4th one a Plicata popped up Blinking Confused which was surprising because I thought in order to get a plicata you must cross directly onto a plicata Shrug! so the next day I came out to see what else had opened and there was another plicata there Smiling I couldn't understand where they were coming from so I came inside and looked it up in our database here on ATP the pedigree of (First Avenue) is Keppel 00-257K, Bollywood sibling, X Keppel 02-204A: (99-117B: (Crystal Gazer sibling x Poem of Ecstasy) x Dance Recital) basically seedlings crossed together there is no plicata in there directly or( Raging Tide) but when I clicked on (Poem Of Ecstasy) it led me to a plant introduced in 1982 called (Merry Madigal) and it comes from a seedling crossed with (Stepping Out) Hurray! so I found my Plicata Lines or at least I think I did. I ended up with 3 plicata's blooming out of the bunch the one with yellow standards was kept to work with and the other 2 discarded because the form was so bad so what will be interesting is if I cross ( First Avenue) directly onto Plicata's or them onto it will I continue to get Plicata's or was this just me getting lucky and hitting the right combination of gene's. Another project for the spring Smiling

(First Avenue X Raging Tide) 13-55

#'s 2 & 10 grabbed me right away... Then I enlarged them and saw just how lovely #4 was... Again, the variety of seedlings you got from that one cross is really interesting...

Brad your seedlings are just wonderful to look at. I got to cross some newer Blyth irises this year in my garden. Also planted a dozen newer Blyth that I ordered this year. I can't wait to make crosses next spring.

I'm learning a lot of stuff on facebook book about how it only takes one gene many generations back to pop up out of no where. I've found in my own breeding program for broken color that anything can pop up.

I hope you have more seedling pictures for us. I'm constantly checking for new post!! I love when people talk about genetics. I'm wanting to learn as much as possible. I like see the results, find out what plants make good parents, what grows good for people close to Indiana weather.

On a side note do you, or anybody else have pictures of how the big boys on the west coast plant and water there fields. I've never been able to find good pictures of this. Maybe one day we could trade or I could borrow a few seedlings to make crosses with.

I am loving 2 and 10. Especially 10. What lovely purple and yellow combos.

Of the plicatas I live #9 with the dark haft marks and the more pronounced purple on the standards.

You are doing great work Brad. Wonderful crosses. You have a knack for iris that cross well.

Enjoying all of the plants. On one of my plants I had to check back 10 generations on one side & 14 generations on the other. It takes a lot of research to find things.

I am excited about Plicata's and for someone looking for unique colors and patterns there is nothing else like them in my opinion they are fascinating because the potential is endless if you want a fun project work Plicata lines. I actually made quite a few crosses trying to work them this year so do have some seeds to look forward to but only had 1 Plicata cross bloom from 2013 it was (Class Ring X Rumor Has It) both good growers here and looking at the pedigree of (Rumor Has It) I think it has a lot of potential. What bloomed was a pretty good mix of both parents but only 2 of them were good enough to keep.

(Class Ring X Rumor Has It) 13-83

Gabe.. Thanks glad you liked the pictures they were a good surprise.

Sherry... Still got 10 to go hoping for more Plicata's Smiling

Les... Thanks I'm glad you like them and out of those I kept 2 & 10 good colors and ruffles nodding

Lucy.. I am lucky we have the ATP database to go through I would have had a much more difficult time figuring that one out with out it (Kent) has done a amazing job with it and I use it all the time especially during bloom season.

Cory.. Thanks and glad you joined in Smiling Barry's stuff is awesome and I'm thankful he thinks outside the box and creates some beautiful color combinations for us to enjoy, his plants hold a ton of potential Smiling I enjoy his catalogs and spend a good portion of the winter months in my free time pouring over them looking at the pedigrees to figure out what made what and trying to come up with a plan of which plants of his and others I want to work on in the spring. I am looking for information on what plant set pods and which plants were pollen fertile and then making a list of plants I want to cross together doing a little homework that way you can save a lot of time in the garden when there blooming Smiling As far as Irrigation you are in Luck I did take pictures of Mid Americas system it was my favorite hoping to copy something close to it for my self in the spring. It is a drip line system ran from a well with a high pressure pump pushing it to all the named plants in the commercial fields and for seedlings which need more water he had a pipe system set up with 40ft wide coverage. If you are ever in my area during Bloom time in May you are welcome to stop by and walk the rows with me the AIS Convention is in Des Moines in 2017 Smiling

Cory.. made me look up pictures from Oregon nodding and I ran into these from Kieth's garden this spring and wanted to show why I am so excited about Plicata's and all the fun patterns that is popping up for him, I think this is 1 cross by the way Big Grin I was there a week or so before the convention and his garden was at Peak and it was amazing I would have been thrilled to find any of them in my seedling patch. The question is How do you pick this has got to be one of the best crosses I have ever seen Smiling

Brad, you have some nice plicatas from that cross between Class Ring and Rumor Has It, but my vote is for number 2 and the purple one with the red beard! Sticking tongue out

Have you ever been able to use Ink Patterns in any crosses? I've tried it several times both ways and can't get anything to take.

Those Keppel seedlings are amazing. Every one is great. Number 10, 14 and 17 strike me as ones I'd have to buy right away! Do you know what the cross was? Honestly, with a field full of seedlings like that, it must take hours of study to check them out. But I suppose like judging horses, I can sort them out pretty quickly between the culls and the winners. I'm not at that place yet with irises. It would seem like it would be easy to miss a nice one in that huge mix.

Thanks for the pictures from mid -American. This gives me some what of an idea. I'm glad I "made" look thru your pictures, Keith's seedlings look great. I did keep looking at them overs and over. Same with your seedlings. I'm with Tom do you know the cross on the Keppel?
