Hmmm, rosemary, thyme, lemon thyme, dill, mexican mint marigold, chives(garlic and onion), basils abt 4 diff kinds, cilantro...not as many this year thanks to all the water curtailing my efforts.

Used in cooking all year, as well as small bouquets in the kitchen-
So many roads to take, choices to make, and laughs to share!

Happy 4th everyone.
I was unable to find any reference to herbs connected to this holiday but there were lots of references to barbecue dishes that used herbs.

So what herbs do you all use to celebrate Independence Day?

This time of year, basil is growing very well in my garden. I use it to make pesto, and use the fresh leaves as much as possible. I love to incorporate other herbs in my pesto--especially parsley. It's wonderful on pizza, grilled chicken, and pasta.

I also recently harvested all of our garlic scapes (as well as my neighbors) and made some wonderful garlic scape pesto with basil.

Is the garlic the wild or garden(domestic)?

It is from my grown domestic garlic. I even love it enough to get my next-door neighbor to give me her scapes (they sell for an outrageous price at our farmers markets) and she doesn't use hers.

That being said--it is a rather sharp flavor. When I use it as a pizza sauce, I mix it with cream cheese and use it as my base. YUM!

That sounds like a great idea, Linda! I guess I should go cut the scapes off and make some pesto... Big Grin

Here it is August already. For my area the school year is about to begin so I thought I'd see what I could find on herbs for ink. Not a whole lot out there but I did find that walnut hulls can be used to make ink. Does anyone know if other dye herbs can be made into ink?

Also, I did a search for holidays in August and found one for National Eat More Herbs and Less Salt day which is on August 29.
So who's eating more herbs and less salt these days regardless of the holiday?

I love "national eat more herb and less salt day" (although I had no idea such a thing existed) Hilarious!

We cannot get enough fresh herbs in the summer. Although there are only 3 in our household, I grow about 10 - 12 basil, 10 parsley, a couple of lemon verbena, and single plants of things like sage, marjoram, oregano, etc.

How can you possibly eat fresh tomatoes from the garden without basil from the garden? I already have made 3 batches of pesto for the freezer. We like to use it as a base for our pizza, instead of red sauce, with fresh tomatoes and some cheese.

We freeze our pesto in 1/4 cup portions. It takes 2-3 portions to spread over a 14-16" pizza crust. We add a thin layer of cheese, some sliced tomatoes, another thin layer of cheese (sometimes a sprinkling of local goat cheese) and bake. We add the fresh basil when it comes out of the oven. My 91 y/o mom (who never ate pizza in her life) loves this stuff. She asks for it every Friday--I try to hold off for every 2-3 weeks.
