Today...Sunny. Areas of frost early in the morning. NW wind 10 to 15 mph.

Dave,
I'm not as bad, but it is miserable out there. I had an all cold breakfast and I'm freezing!

Gene,
The road past my house ends in gravel. Farm semis can carry gravel dust in past my house and to the end of my block if they have just fluffed up the gravel. And we are people who like to be able to open the windows.
ROTFL! How true is that? We have a few Walmart checkers we've gotten to know. One we make sure we go to each week, and it is like having a relative there. These are all older women with various health problems. I fee sorry for them on their feeet all dy. Most have knee problems.

So another cold day. The wind will be the disappointment. I should have mowed yesterday, in keeping with every four days, but It's not happening unless it feels a whole lot better later. May be tomorrow....

I live on a gravel road and love it for the most part. Potholes I hate but a grader takes care of that problem. I like the fact you can hear the cars coming and there's no oil involved.

You know you are in the Midwest when you gotta pull over to let a horse-drawn ambulance gallop by! I tip my hat to you.

Amish country I take it? I have to go about an hour north of here to see anything like that. It's on my list for one of these days!!

I live close to the Amish, but have never seen a horse drawn ambulance. Wow.

You know you're from the Midwest when your Dad gives you waxy hotkaps he's had in the barn since I don't know when, lol!

Sally - those are so cool! Have never seen before. Are you going to use them in the veg garden?

I've used them on the cabbages before when they were tiny.

You set the waxy one over the plant. Set the cardboard one over top and pour dirt around the edge. Remove the cardboard and you are sealed. I will most likely not use them again, keeping them nice as an antique. They might be as old as me. Maybe older. I'm not sure there is a date on them.According to the link, much older than me.

Oh those are too cool. Love old stuff like that. Nope I wouldn't use them either.

You know you are in Mid-west when orange barrels out number the weeds along the roadside for MONTHS with no one working on the road.

Good one, happ! Road construction season has started here and will be very frustrating this year. Construction on I65, I80/90/94.

Yep!! I-35 is the worst offender for that. They've been ripping up the concrete and asphalt on there for years now and to me looks like they do the same ones over and over and not moving down the line.

Good one Happ!
They've been ''working'' on the bridge two miles out of town. We have a solar stoplight and no workers in sight...

You know you're from the Midwest when you comment on the baby corn leaves just popping thru and you don't farm.

Yes, the Midwest and the Corn Belt are pretty much the same thing, IMO. Corn does not grow when it gets really hot out during the day but it does grow at night when it is cooler. Just once in your life make a point of standing out in the middle of a field of corn at night away from town and the highway and listen to the corn grow. Now, that is Midwest ! Gene

Interesting about the corn not liking the hot days of summer. Gene - your comment makes me think of supernatural thrillers! Hilarious!

Oh, gosh, I am sure they have and then some. Corn is a BIG industry. I'd bet the most currently studied plant. OK, wheat and soybeans are up there as well. Random trivial fact: A record in the plant world I believe - given the right tropical conditions, a single Banana leaf can grow over 100 sq. inches in a day. Gene

Holy smokes! That's fast! My dwarf banana is just waiting for some warmth and real sunshine. I've given it a bigger pot so it's ready to go - maybe by the end of next week.

Gene,
I haven't stood in a field listening to corn grow, but I have, to sneak a few ears for the squirrels in the fall.

We are finally going to warm up this week. Finally!!
