Yes and no. The seasonal brook that jumps the bank above us does a lot more damage running down through the horse pasture than the water running underground with frost heaving in the low spot of the backyard. The ground underneath is frozen solid, and the water just runs over the top under the heaved sod layer. Once everything thaws out the sod layer falls back down again on top of the soil. Hard to explain unless you actually see it. When it's frozen, like now, you can walk on it. On a warm day though you can break through and go down sometimes a foot or more - that's how high the frost/water lifts the sod layer. And once the bottom soil starts to thaw with the water, mud and sod/air layer...you can easily sink past your knees. It is the one area of the property we don't do much with....There are two raised beds for veggies out there, every year I figure they will sink out of sight and be ...gone.

Oh my, that's really interesting. I guess if you were walking in the woods & weren't familiar with those woods you could break through & go down a foot or even to your knees.

Yes Char, it is early for red winged blackbirds here. I really don't recall having them when we still had snow on the ground. Now I have seen Robins when we still have snow.

Cold this morning -- 43, so I think I will take a pass on working outside. Funny how everything is relative. When we lived in Illinois, 43 would have been warm, however, in Florida, it's cold.
Any day you wake up on the sunny side of the grass is a good day.

The raccoon continues to visit our yard during the day and I sincerely wish he would visit somewhere else. Yesterday I caught sight of him out of the corner of my eye. I went over to the door and knocked on the glass. He looked up but continued to ignore me when I knocked several more times.

So far it is 82 here today. This very warm spring we are having has evidently brought out the pack rats, mice, little ground squirrels etc. When I looked out front this morning I saw one of my stock had been pulled out of the pot and lying on the ground. Crying When I went out I saw the other one in the pot had its flowers trimmed off of it and looking around I saw the group of pots of Violas had had their centers eaten out of them!! This grouping of pots was looking so nice. I am not a person that likes to hurt little critters but they 'drew first blood' and I am pretty ticked off! I will do what I have to, to save my flowers. The back yard has a huge number of pots all in bloom and I know they will be next! Angry Usually these creatures do not bother the front yard!!! Sighing!
