Tara so glad you are OK and the damage was minimal. Sorry about your Sweet Almond; another friend in central Florida lost a huge one also, they must be very shallow rooted.

Thanks Alice, Yes I think that seems to be the case. I planted this one nearly 2 years ago. We had several rainy days with a Nor'easter before Matthew. The ground was definitely saturated! So disappointing! We're going to start with cutting a lot off the top, and see if it's at all salvageable. I really hate losing it! But if it does come to that, I do have a Senna, currently being container grown that I could replace it with. We'll see...

I'm hoping that your property is not becoming to damaged/flooded by this nasty storm. Keeping my thoughts and prayers for good outcomes headed your way! Crossing Fingers!

Are you sure now that Matthew is gone? Last I read, they still thought it might loop back.

The current thinking is that if it does loop back it will go south again, and cross the Bahamas towards Miami.

Hope you can salvage that nice sweet almond, Tara. Doesn't look like too many roots are torn out of the ground so maybe just standing it up, staking it firmly against further wind damage will hold it together until it can root again. Cooler weather is coming so that will also help it but I do think you need to prune back some of the top growth as well.

I've been following it on the Florida forum. So glad you're all ok, and hope the damage isn't too bad.

I am just sitting here in NC with nothing to do but play here at NGA. The damage to my neighborhood has turned out to be massive but no news yet on my home. Our marina has been destroyed and there are boats everywhere. More than 80 are missing. Several of the boats blew/floated about 3 miles away and turned up on the airport runway. Phil is hoping to find a nice 35' one in our back yard. I am getting goofy but that is all I can do at this point. We are alive, the kid's home is OK and we are insured. A house is just a house.

oh my, Alice....this sounds awful...I'm glad you are somewhere safe..but not knowing whats going on with your home has got to be unbearable... Group hug ..I hope and will keep you in my thoughts that the damage is minimal. Be careful what you wish for ( regarding the 35' boat) that happened to me when I lived on the Chesapeake Bay..it took forever to get that boat back to the water.

That's right. Things - even houses can be repaired or replaced. It's people that count. Oh, and plants of course. Maybe your plants just got a really massive watering, and will be there in your garden, but rest assured you have plant insurance with all of us. We will send you all the replacements you need once you are back in your house or otherwise situated again.

Well thank you but after this week I think I may take knitting more seriously and just read about your plants. LOL

The plants I moved indoors will (I hope) just be pretty dry. The ones I moved to the garage may or may not have had a salt water bath - we are required by code to have vents in our garage walls. The ones still outside, if they haven't blown away, will have definitely had a salt water bath. It will be interesting.

We are leaving Asheville and traveling back to Columbia today, it is only 2 1/2 hours from home and it will be easier to run back and forth if we can't move right back in. Sounds strange but there is no place closer. While there are many hotels along the coast, there are few places inland until you hit the Columbia area. Most coastal hotels are still closed. Governor just said it will be Monday at the earliest before we can get back into the county and who knows when we'll get out to the islands.

Thanks everyone for your support and encouragement.

I hope you'll find minimal damage when you get back home, Alice. I know how difficult this all will be for you, having gone through many hurricanes over the last five decades.

I can't get Alice's situation out of mind. This is a Sunday and I think it's appropriate for us to lift up a prayer or at least warm, fuzzy feelings for our friend Alice. May she find her home with no more than minimal damage and her orchids full of buds. Group hug

I am truly blessed to have such great friends here. I can't thank you enough for all your support and encouragement.
We hope to find out the condition of our house this morning. Someone who rode out the storm is going to try and go by to check for any damage and will send photos if there is anything significant. They couldn't do it earlier because there are thousands of trees down and we are told they are literally woven together and difficult to clear. They have opened the road into our county this morning but we still can't get to our island. Maybe tomorrow or Wednesday?????

Glad to hear you might at least get a peek at your house, Alice. How agonizing not to be able to get out there yourselves! I'd hold out hope that your stalwart oak trees might not have fallen down, certainly not as easily as most of the other types of trees. If they stood, the would also have protected the house somewhat.
